Background: Adverse outcomes following restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) in adults have been attributed to steroid exposure and use of hand-sutured anastomoses. This study analyses complications in children undergoing RPC.
Methods: This study is a retrospective review of all children undergoing RPC in an English regional center over a 10-year period.
Objectives: To measure concentrations of fecal calprotectin (f-calprotectin) in infants with very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) longitudinally and to describe changes in f-calprotectin in infants who develop severe abdominal disease.
Patients And Methods: The study included 59 VLBW infants. Seven patients (disease group) developed severe abdominal disease defined as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) or a condition leading to laparotomy.
A 9-year-old girl presented with lethargy, malaise & chest pain. Her blood counts confirmed hypochromic microcytic anemia. She was prescribed iron supplements.
