Educational science meets simulation.

With the increased use of simulation to teach the knowledge and skills demanded of clinical practice, toward the achievement of optimal patient care outcomes, it becomes increasingly important that clinician educators have fundamental knowledge about educational science and its applications to teaching and learning. As the foremost goal of teaching is to facilitate learning, it is essential that the simulation experience be oriented to the learning process. In order for this to occur, is it necessary for the clinician educator to understand the fundamentals of educational science and theories of education such that they can apply them to teaching and learning in an environment focused on medical simulation.

Background: This paper describes the curriculum and impact of an innovative resident-as-teacher course at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The intent of the course is to prepare students across undergraduate and graduate medical education for their roles as teacher, learner and leader during residency.

Method: The elective introduces teaching skills curricula during year two of medical school and integrates it into residency years.

Objective: Residents do a significant amount of teaching. Therefore, as medical students prepare for the clinical aspects of their residency, it is also important for them to prepare for their role of physician as teacher. With the goal of offering fourth-year students an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills, an elective was designed that presented them with an opportunity to expand their knowledge base in education, and then apply and practice this new set of knowledge.
