Purpose: To describe a case of fat embolism syndrome (FES) following elective tendon contracture release in a patient with myotonic dystrophy, to highlight the importance of considering this entity in the differential diagnosis of acute postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction.
Clinical Features: A 34-yr-old man with myotonic dystrophy underwent uneventful tendon contracture release under regional anesthesia. In the immediate postoperative period, neurological and respiratory complications developed, requiring intensive care support.
Aim: The aim of this paper is to describe the experiences of mothers with serious mental illness from their perspectives and how they attempted to manage their mothering circumstances.

We utilize a conceptual model that incorporates three types of planning for later life: public protection, self-insurance, and self-protection. Drawing on qualitative, life-history data from a study of 51 mid-life and older Canadians, we examined whether individuals recognized the risks associated with later life, and if so, how far these recognitions entered into the preparations people made for their futures.

Qualitative methods were used to examine 34 cases between 1994 and 1998, of which 23 had been successful and 11 aborted. For purposes of comparison, the researchers developed a template of interviews with College personnel and documents, incorporating the College's philosophy and expectations of the process.
