Matrix metalloproteinases are zinc-dependent enzymes whose main function is to cleave the components of the extracellular matrix. Their overexpression is evident in all cancers but to date there is no satisfactory way to inhibit their actions. Here, we look at their types, their structures, their functions and the developing understanding we have of them in the search for ways to drug them and inhibit their actions selectively.

Follicular non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is an indolent, or slow-growing, malignant disease of the lymphoid tissue, which usually responds to initial therapy. However, the disease is characterized by multiple relapses and remissions, eventually causing death. Several effective therapies are available, but improvement of overall survival in patients with follicular NHL has not been demonstrated.

Therapeutic cancer vaccines treat disease by stimulating the body's immune system. They are a form of active immunotherapy with the goal of producing an immune response that involves the cellular and humoral components of the immune system. These two components appear to be complementary and work together to induce tumor regression and long-lasting immunity to the disease being treated.

Fifty canine fecal samples were evaluated by five flotation procedures to compare the sensitivity of the zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) centrifugation flotation test with ZnSO4 flotation tests using benchtop incubation during the flotation period. One or more parasite species were detected in 40 samples. Results showed that centrifugation with ZnSO4 solution was significantly more likely to detect a positive sample than benchtop procedures.
