The aim of this study was to examine the neurocognitive deficits associated with the first episode of major depressive disorder (recent onset depression, ROD) in adolescents as compared to adult patients. Cross-sectional neurocognitive data from the baseline assessments of the PRONIA study with N = 650 (55.31% females) were analyzed.

Smooth pursuit eye movements are considered a well-established and quantifiable biomarker of sensorimotor function in psychosis research. Identifying psychotic syndromes on an individual level based on neurobiological markers is limited by heterogeneity and requires comprehensive external validation to avoid overestimation of prediction models. Here, we studied quantifiable sensorimotor measures derived from smooth pursuit eye movements in a large sample of psychosis probands (N = 674) and healthy controls (N = 305) using multivariate pattern analysis.

Subtle subjective visual dysfunctions (VisDys) are reported by about 50% of patients with schizophrenia and are suggested to predict psychosis states. Deeper insight into VisDys, particularly in early psychosis states, could foster the understanding of basic disease mechanisms mediating susceptibility to psychosis, and thereby inform preventive interventions. We systematically investigated the relationship between VisDys and core clinical measures across three early phase psychiatric conditions.

There is an urgent need for a better understanding of the multidimensional factors of medication adherence attitudes in patients with psychosis in order to enhance adherence as up to 75% of patients stop or change their medication within a year. 81 patients with psychosis were assessed on symptom expression, self-stigmatization, adherence attitudes, QoL, social support and therapeutic alliance judged by patients and clinicians. Regression analyses were used to test whether better QoL, more social support and a better therapeutic alliance are associated with more positive and less negative adherence attitudes.

Different aspects of self-stigmatization represent barriers for recovery in patients with psychosis disorders. It is unclear whether addressing patient's competence and control beliefs could attenuate the extent of self-stigmatization. The major aim of this study was to identify predictors of self-stigmatization derived from competence and control beliefs in patients (N = 80).

The use of modern communication and information technology in the health sector, known as eHealth, has the potential to reduce gaps in psychiatric and psychotherapeutic healthcare. In order to successfully implement eHealth it is important to assess the attitude of all stakeholders. The attitude of the patients towards eHealth has been frequently investigated but there is a lack of research on the side of the professionals.

The use of hypocaloric parenteral nutrition (HPN) is very common in surgical medicine because it allows for a standardized peripheral venous supply of nutrients. HPN causes very little stress to the posttraumatically labile carbohydrate metabolism-this applies to the use of glucose as well as to sugar substitutes: For example, mean glucose concentrations in serum on glucose administration of 2-3 g/kg/day are between 5.5 and 8.

O2-uptake was measured continuously in 18 polytraumatized and 21 long-term ventilated patients. All patients were on assisted ventilation with sufficient sedation and analgesia. O2-uptake was measured every minute, the values were recorded over 24 h and the mean O2-uptake/min was calculated.

The main disadvantages of today's heart valve prostheses are the need for lifelong anticoagulation for mechanical valves and problems with biodegradation for tissue valves. Therefore, a new valve type devoid of these problems would be a major step forward. In order to evaluate a new valve design made by dipmolding with different PU materials, an animal test series was carried out in which two valves from each material were implanted into the mitral position of growing Jersey calves.

Mechanical support of the heart is becoming an established method for emergency situations or bridge to transplant applications. Nevertheless the discussion concerning the importance of co- or counterpulsation isn't yet finished. Using a theoretical model of the cardiovascular system, the influence of a LVAD triggered to co- and counterpulsation will be discussed.
