Article Synopsis
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are commonly used to prevent re-bleeding in high-risk peptic ulcer patients after endoscopic treatment, and this study compares their effectiveness to vonoprazan (VPZ), which can achieve similar gastric pH levels.
  • The study involved 44 patients with high-risk peptic ulcers, randomly assigned to receive either PPI or VPZ, and key outcomes measured included re-bleeding rates at different time intervals, blood transfusions needed, hospital stay duration, and ulcer healing rates.
  • Results showed a 9.1% re-bleeding rate in the PPI group within 72 hours compared to 0% in the VPZ group, but no significant differences were found

Background/aims: A high prevalence of GERD has been reported in patients with supragastric belching. We aim to evaluate reflux characteristics and explore the temporal relationship between supragastric belches (SGBs) and reflux episodes in GERD patients with excessive belching.

Methods: Twenty-four hour esophageal pH-impedance monitoring was analyzed.

Manometry, particularly high-resolution manometry is the preferred diagnostic tool used to evaluate esophageal motor function. This investigation is strongly indicated in the setting of dysphagia, but is also useful in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), especially in case of failure of conventional treatment to exclude alternative diagnoses and prior to anti-reflux surgery. Moreover, ineffective esophagogastric junction barrier function and esophageal motor dysfunction are pathophysiological mechanisms in GERD and can be identified by manometry.

Background: Preoperative esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in patients undergoing bariatric surgery can help surgeons detect abnormalities in the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract that may require a change in surgical plan. However, the need for EGD before bariatric surgery is controversial.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the prevalence of UGI abnormalities and evaluate the predictive factors of abnormal findings that require a change in surgical plan or cause a delay in surgical treatment in patients undergoing bariatric surgery and develop a prediction model.

Esophageal leiomyoma is uncommon. However, this tumor is the most common subepithelial tumor affecting the esophagus, comprising approximately two-thirds of benign esophageal tumors. Leiomyomas of the esophagus rarely cause symptoms when they are single and <5 cm.

Background: Autologous blood is a novel, high-efficacy sclerosant for treatment of malignant pleural effusion (MPE), similar to tetracycline. There has been no comparative data between autologous blood and a worldwide sclerosant like talc. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of autologous blood versus talc pleurodesis.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the performance of preoperative 6-minute walk test (6MWT) for predicting postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) in high risk patients undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in patients scheduled to undergo elective thoracic or nonthoracic surgery and indicated for preoperative pulmonary evaluation in Songklanagarind Hospital, Songkhla, Thailand. Preoperative spirometry, 6MWT were done and 30-day PPC were recorded.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare the diagnostic yield and safety profile of sputum induction (SI) with nebulized racemic salbutamol solution versus hypertonic saline in smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).

Methods: The prospective study was conducted at Songklanagarind Hospital, Thailand. Suspected smear-negative pulmonary TB cases were recruited and randomized to receive SI with either nebulized racemic salbutamol solution or 3% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution.

Objectives: Autologous blood pleurodesis (ABP) is used for the treatment of pneumothorax with a good efficacy. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of ABP in the treatment of malignant pleural effusion (MPE).

Methods: A prospective study was conducted at Songklanagarind Hospital, Thailand.

Background: Post-extubation stridor occurs after translaryngeal intubation results to re-intubation in a number of patients.

Objective: To determine the cut-off value of the cuff leak volume test among Thai patients as a predictor for post-extubation stridor

Material And Method: Demographic data and cuff leak volume were collected from patients who had been intubated with planned extubation. Clinical stridor was observed and identified after extubation.

Background: Simethicone improves endoscopic visibility and diagnostic accuracy during colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy. Nevertheless, there have been limited data on its usefulness in esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of simethicone on enhancing endoscopic visibility in patients undergoing EGD.
