Background: Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura commonly affects women of childbearing age and is associated with maternal and fetal complications. Management of a pregnant patient is difficult and requires combined care of obstetrician and a neonatologist. We report our experience of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura during pregnancy during the last 7 years.

Objective: To study the effects of modifications in the Ziehl-Neelsen staining procedure on predictive accuracy for acid fast bacilli in comparison to the conventional technique. Simplicity of procedure and reagent economy were the factors taken into consideration.

Design: Comparative evaluation between thick and thin air-dried smears stained conventionally and thick ethanol-fixed smears stained by the modified technique was done.

Malarial hepatopathy.

J Postgrad Med

February 2007

Jaundice is a common clinical presentation in severe malaria, seen in approximately 2.5% patients with falciparum infection but hepatitis is unusual. Although hepatic dysfunction is unusual and hepatic encephalopathy is almost never seen in malaria, yet, cases of hepatic dysfunction are being increasingly reported in patients with P.

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the commonest cancer among Indian women. High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) detection holds the potential to be used as a tool to identify women, at risk for subsequent development of cervical cancer. There is a pressing need for identifying prevalence of asymptomatic cervical HPV infection in the local population.

Gliomas with cartilaginous metaplasia are extremely uncommon and thought to be due to metaplasia of the mesenchymal supportive elements. The tumors are located in the midline, mostly fourth ventricle and rarely in the pons. The present paper describes an unusual case of anaplastic ependymoma with cartilaginous and osseous metaplasia in a young boy which was located in the suprasellar, interpeduncular prepontine and left cerebello-pontine cistern.

Blood collection is an important preanalytical component of haematological testing. This questionnaire based study was conducted on laboratory personnel to elicit their knowledge and practice regarding blood collection procedures for haematological testing. Questionnaire comprised of 37 multiple choice questions, of which 10 questions each were related to essential and desirable knowledge, 10 to practice and 7 to educational and job profile.

Rapid diagnosis of histopathological material is becoming increasingly desirable. In neuropathology, crush smear preparation and frozen section diagnosis of tissues removed during operative procedures, have remained as essential tools for rapid diagnosis. Microwave technology has been introduced into the field of tissue processing and staining in past decade.

Aims: Clear cell meningioma (CCM) is an uncommon variant of meningioma, which affect younger patients, occur more often in spinal or cerebello pontine locations and shows a higher recurrence rate. Only few case reports have been described in the literature. The study has been undertaken to document the clinicopathological features of nine cases of CCM, operated at All India Institute of Medical Sciences during 1998 to December 2005.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has resulted in an increase in the prevalence of many opportunistic infections and has caused re-emergence of certain diseases in the developing world. In tropical countries, immunosupression due to HIV infection has resulted in changes in the clinical presentation of endemic infections. Although the immune deficiency caused by HIV infection should presumably lead to an increased frequency of clinical malaria in areas with endemic malarial infection, like India, evidence of the association between HIV and malaria in India is scanty, with only a few studies showing a positive correlation.

Primary ovarian pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy that must be demonstrated with use of 4 Spiegelberg criteria. It is usually diagnosed at laparotomy or laparoscopy, although it may resemble a hemorrhagic corpus luteum. Successful conservative management of ovarian pregnancy with methotrexate has been reported only occasionally.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between elevated blood pressure and insulin resistance, focusing on the effects of angiotensin II type 1-receptor (ATR(1)) antagonists on insulin sensitivity through the PPARgamma nuclear receptor.
  • In laboratory tests, some ATR(1) antagonists showed potential as PPARgamma ligands, but only telmisartan and candesartan demonstrated significant activity.
  • However, in live mice, these antagonists did not improve insulin sensitivity as effectively as rosiglitazone, suggesting that the impact of sartans on insulin sensitivity might involve different mechanisms and highlighting the need for new treatments for hypertension and insulin resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • - Mitochondrial encephalomyopathies are a diverse group of disorders affecting oxidative metabolism in both skeletal muscles and the central nervous system, with their prevalence still largely unknown as the field advances.
  • - These disorders have complex clinical presentations due to variations in phenotype and genotype, making accurate diagnosis challenging; diagnosis often involves muscle biopsies and genetic testing.
  • - The review aims to summarize mitochondrial structure, function, and genetics, alongside evaluation and treatment methods for suspected cases of these conditions.

The design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of arylsulfonamidooxazoles as 11beta-HSD1 inhibitors and the serendipitous discovery of beta-keto sulfones as potent 11beta-HSD1 inhibitors are described here. These two classes of compounds are not active against 11beta-HSD2 and therefore may have significant therapeutic potential for metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and related metabolic dysfunctions.
