Lateral medullary syndrome (LMS) is a neurological disorder usually presenting as loss of pain and thermal sensation over the ipsilateral face and contralateral half of the body, ipsilateral limb ataxia, Horner's syndrome, dysphagia, nystagmus, hiccups among other symptoms but never with limb weakness. In the present case, the patient presented with ipsilateral hemiparesis, which can be attributed to the extension of the infarct caudally beyond the pyramidal decussation, affecting the corticospinal fibers in the upper cervical cord, a variant of LMS, known as Opalski syndrome (OS).

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) refer to a complex heterogeneous group of diseases which are associated with the accumulation of amyloid fibrils or plaques in the brain leading to progressive loss of neuronal functions. Alzheimer's disease is one of the major NDD responsible for 60-80 % of all dementia cases. Background: Treatment effects of conventional approaches with antipsychotics or psychosocial interventions are limited when it comes to reducing negative and cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia. While there is emerging clinical evidence that new, augmented protocols based on theta-burst stimulation can increase rTMS efficacy dramatically in depression, data on similar augmented therapies are limited in schizophrenia. Ovastacin (ASTL), a zinc metalloprotease, is released from a fertilized egg during exocytosis of cortical granules which occurs minutes after the sperm and egg fuse. ASTL cleaves ZP2, one of the four primary glycoproteins of human zona pellucida, and this cleavage prevents polyspermy, causes zona pellucida hardening, and also protects the pre-implantation embryo. Any perturbation in the activity of ASTL can thus disturb this process and may lead to infertility without changing the gross morphology of the oocyte.

Unlabelled: The inability to perceive audio-visual speech as a unified event may contribute to social impairments and language deficits in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, we examined and compared two groups of infants on their sensitivity to audio-visual asynchrony for a social (speaking face) and non-social event (bouncing ball) and assessed the relations between multisensory integration and language production. Infants at elevated likelihood of developing ASD were less sensitive to audio-visual synchrony for the social event than infants without elevated likelihood.

Although patients generally prefer oral drug delivery to injections, low permeability of the gastrointestinal tract makes this method impossible for most biomacromolecules. In this study, oils extracted from nigella seeds (NS) subjected to microwave roasting at 180, 360, 540 and 720 W for 5 and 10 min were evaluated for quality and stability characteristics. The impact of microwave powers on oil yield, pigment content, Maillard reaction products (MRPs), radical scavenging activity (RSA), color, viscosity, total phenolic content (TPC), oxidative stability index (OSI) and fatty acid composition (FAC) of oil was studied. TPC, RSA, OSI, MRPs, viscosity, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were higher in oil of NS heated at 720 W for 10 min while maximum oil yield and low acid value was observed for NS heated at 540 W for 10 min.

Celiac disease is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by activation of the immune system in response to deamidation of gluten peptides brought about by tissue transglutaminase-2 (TG2). Overexpression of interleukin-15 (IL-15) in the intestinal epithelium and the lamina propria leads to the dysregulation of the immune system, leading to epithelial damage. The goal of this study was to develop an RNA interference therapeutic strategy for celiac disease using a combination of TG2 and IL-15 gene silencing in the inflamed intestine.

Computed tomography angiography not only detects atherosclerotic coronary artery disease but also helps delineate the anomalous coronary arterial anatomy that may be more than just an incidental finding and could contribute to patients' symptomatology. Additionally, identification of coronary artery anomalies is clinically significant for preoperative planning and optimizing the approach for coronary catheterizations or surgical treatments. The behavior of phyllodes tumors is unpredictable and can behave as benign fibroadenomas or malignant neoplasms mimicking the course of aggressive sarcomas, characterized by distant metastases and a high short-term mortality. The malignant forms are treated with surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy, but often with poor outcomes.
