In lowlanders, high altitude (HA) acclimatization induces hemoconcentration by reducing plasma volume (PV) and increasing total hemoglobin mass (Hb). Conversely, Tibetan highlanders living at HA are reported to have a similar hemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) as lowlanders near sea level, and we investigated whether this reflects alterations in the PV or the Hb response to HA. Baseline assessment of PV and Hb was performed by carbon monoxide rebreathing at low altitudes (∼1,400 m) in Sherpas (an ethnic group of Tibetans living in Nepal) and native lowlanders.

Pure Sertoli cell tumor of the ovary: A case report.

Pure Sertoli cell tumors are an uncommon variant of rare ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors. Due to nonspecific clinical and imaging features, diagnosis is often made after histopathological examination. The prognosis is excellent as most are detected in the early stages and surgical resection is often curative in most cases.

Esophageal Perforation following Accidental Ingestion of a Razor Blade.

Background: Ingestion of sharp foreign bodies is uncommon and often underreported. It can present with esophageal perforation which is a life-threatening complication requiring prompt diagnosis and management. We report a case of accidental ingestion of a razor blade in a chronic alcoholic who presented with hematemesis after an esophageal perforation, the diagnosis of which was confirmed by radiology.

Neurobrucellosis: A differential not to be missed in patients presenting with neuropsychiatric features.

When a patient presents with undulating fever and neuropsychiatric features, neurobrucellosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis. If diagnosed early, neurobrucellosis is a treatable disease with a favorable outcome.

Symptomatic familial adenomatous polyposis in an adolescent: A case report.

Introduction: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an inherited colorectal cancer syndrome characterized by several adenomatous polyps of the gastrointestinal mucosa with a universal risk of colorectal cancer in a lifetime. FAP is usually asymptomatic in the first decade of life.

Case Presentation: We report a case of a 13-year-old girl diagnosed with FAP who presented in our center with symptoms of hematochezia along with a positive history of the untimely demise of her father and elder sister with similar symptoms.

Diesel siphoner's lung: An unusual cause of hydrocarbon pneumonitis.

The practice of manual siphoning of diesel from fuel tanks is common among automobile mechanics in Nepal. When an automobile mechanic with a history of diesel siphonage presents with respiratory symptoms, the diesel siphoner's lung diagnosis should be considered. Clinical suspicion confirmed by radiological findings can help in early management and prevention of permanent damage.

Giant cell glioblastoma in 6-year-old kid: Report of an unusual case.

Pediatric giant cell glioblastoma, a highly malignant and lethal tumor, can only be distinguished from glioblastoma multiforme histologically. Though it is said to have a better prognosis, adequate evidence in favor is lacking. Early diagnosis with gross total resection and adjuvant chemotherapy might increase the survival period.
