Background: Signal-averaged electrocardiogram (SAECG) records myocardial depolarization, and can detect inhomogeneous/slow conduction in fibrotic myocardium, which promotes reentrant ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is associated with a high prevalence of cardiac fibrosis and VAs, but abnormal SAECG has low predictive power for VAs. We have developed a three-dimensional coherent diffraction imaging algorithm to retrieve phases of diffraction patterns of samples in grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering experiments. The algorithm interprets the diffraction patterns using the distorted-wave Born approximation instead of the Born approximation, as in this case, the existence of a reflected beam from the substrate causes the diffraction pattern to deviate significantly from the simple Fourier transform of the object. Detailed computer simulations show that the algorithm works.

Magnetic skyrmions exhibit unique, technologically relevant pseudo-particle behaviors which arise from their topological protection, including well-defined, 3D dynamic modes that occur at microwave frequencies. During dynamic excitation, spin waves are ejected into the interstitial regions between skyrmions, creating the magnetic equivalent of a turbulent sea. However, since the spin waves in these systems have a well-defined length scale, and the skyrmions are on an ordered lattice, ordered structures from spin-wave interference can precipitate from the chaos.
