Controllable construction of γ-FeO nanocubes anchored on carbon nanotube nanoribbons; boosting electrocatalytic activity for organic pollutant detection in vegetables.

Developing a highly efficient electrocatalyst for detecting hazardous bisphenol S (BPS) is essential to minimize health risks. Herein, we fabricate γ-FeO nanocubes (IONCs) anchored on carbon nanotube nanoribbons (CNRs) (denoted as IONCs-CNRs) for the electrochemical detection of BPS in vegetables. Importantly, the IONCs can be selectively formed only on CNRs via amperometric deposition, while γ-FeO cubic clusters (IOCCs) form in the absence of CNRs.

Analyzing the effect of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag on anxiety disorders and health-related quality of life: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Anxiety disorders significantly impair the quality of life (QOL). Studies on the effect of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag on anxiety disorders are limited. This study aimed to elucidate the contributions of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag to the prevalence and severity of anxiety disorders in Koreans.

Learning curve for robot-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy: A single institution experience.

Background: Robot-assisted nipple sparing mastectomy (RANSM) is emerging because it offers hidden incisions and ergonomic movements. In this study, we report the learning curve and feasibility of RANSM.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted among women who underwent RANSM with immediate breast reconstruction from July 2019 to June 2022.

Examining the association of breakfast skipping with sleep disturbance, mental health, and health-related quality of life: data from the 2018 Korean community health survey.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between breakfast skipping and its effects on sleep disorders, mental health, and health-related quality of life among Korean adults. Utilizing data from the 2018 Korea Community Health Survey, this cross-sectional analysis included 173,272 adults aged 19 years and older. Instruments used for assessment included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depression, the EuroQol 5-dimension (EQ-5D) for health-related quality of life, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for sleep disorders.

Relationship between mid-sleep time and depression, health-related quality of life, and sleep deprivation in the 2018 Korea Community Health Survey.

This cross-sectional study examined the relationship of mid-sleep time (MST) with depression, quality of life, and sleep deprivation. This study included 173 284 adults aged ≥ 19 years who participated in the 2018 Korea Community Health Survey. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depression, EuroQol-5 dimension for health-related quality of life, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for MST, daytime sleepiness, and sleep quality were used.

Obstructive sleep apnea related to mental health, health-related quality of life and multimorbidity: A nationwide survey of a representative sample in Republic of Korea.

Objectives: This study assessed the effects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on mental health, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and multimorbidity in Korean adults.

Methods: The study included 8030 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Ⅷ (2019-2020). The risk of OSA was assessed using STOP-BANG questionnaire.

50% effective concentration of sevoflurane for immobility in cerebral palsy children undergoing botulinum toxin injection.

Background: This prospective study aimed to determine the optimum end-tidal sevoflurane concentration required for immobility during botulinum toxin injection in spontaneously breathing children with cerebral palsy (CP).

Methods: Twenty-three children with spastic CP, aged 3 to 12 years, with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I and II, scheduled to receive botulinum toxin type A injection were enrolled in the study. After induction of deep sedation using pre-filled 8% sevoflurane in oxygen and maintenance of the predetermined end-tidal sevoflurane concentration, the botulinum toxin was injected in spontaneously breathing children.

SIAH2 regulates DNA end resection and replication fork recovery by promoting CtIP ubiquitination.

Human CtIP maintains genomic integrity primarily by promoting 5' DNA end resection, an initial step of the homologous recombination (HR). A few mechanisms have been suggested as to how CtIP recruitment to damage sites is controlled, but it is likely that we do not yet have full understanding of the process. Here, we provide evidence that CtIP recruitment and functioning are controlled by the SIAH2 E3 ubiquitin ligase.

Serum Folate Related to Five Measurements of Obesity and High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein in Korean Adults.

This study investigated the effects of folic acid on obesity and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII 2016-2018), 6394 adults (aged 19-80 years) who met the study criteria were identified and divided into young, middle-aged, and older adult groups. The analysis assessed associations using logistic regression for complex samples.

Could the Injury Severity Score be a new indicator for surgical treatment in patients with traumatic splenic injury?

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a higher Injury Severity Score (ISS) could serve as an indicator of splenectomy in patients with traumatic splenic lacerations.

Methods: A total of 256 cases of splenic laceration were collected from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2018. After the application of exclusion criteria, 105 were eligible for this study.

Desflurane and remifentanil anesthesia in a child with citrin deficiency: A case report.

Rationale: Hyperammonemia, metabolic derangement, and/or the prolonged effects of anesthetics may lead to delayed emergence from general anesthesia as well as the onset of type 2 citrullinemia, even in compensated patients with citrin deficiency.

Patient Concern: A 5-year-old girl with citrin deficiency was scheduled for blepharoplasty under general anesthesia. She developed hyperammonemia with temporary interruption of medication for a few days before surgery.

Homologous recombination (HR) is critical for error-free repair of DNA double-strand breaks. Chromatin loading of RAD51, a key protein that mediates the recombination, is a crucial step in the execution of the HR repair. Here, we present evidence that SUMOylation of RAD51 is crucial for the RAD51 recruitment to chromatin and HR repair.

Determining the etiology of small bowel obstruction in patients without intraabdominal operative history: a retrospective study.

Purpose: Most of the causes of small bowel obstruction (SBO) in patients without a history of abdominal surgery are unclear at initial assessment. This study was conducted to identify the etiology and clinical characteristics of SBO in virgin abdomens and discuss the proper management.

Methods: A retrospective review involving operative cases of SBO from a single institute, which had no history of abdominal surgery, was conducted between January 2010 and December 2020.

This study investigated how folic acid affects muscle strength and the effects of vitamin A on quality of life in adults. Baseline data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII 2016-2018) was used to find 6112 adults (ages 19-80) meeting study criteria. The participants were divided into three groups: young adults (ages 19-39), middle-aged (ages 40-64), and elderly (≥65 years).

Unlocking Rapid Charging and Extended Lifetimes for Li-Ion Batteries Using Freestanding Quantum Conversion-Type Aerofilm Anode.

Batteries capable of quick charging as fast as fossil fuel vehicles are becoming a vital issue in the electric vehicle market. However, conversion-type materials promising as a next-generation anode have many problems to satisfy fast charging and long-term cycles due to their low conductivity and large irreversibility despite a high theoretical capacity. Here, we report effective strategies for a SnO-based anode to enable rapid-charging, long-cycle, and high reversible capacity.

Bottom-Up Synthesized All-Thermal-Catalyst Aerogels for Heat-Regenerative Air Filtration.

Airborne particular matter (PM) pollution is an increasing global issue and alternative sources of filter fibers are now an area of significant focus. Compared with relatively mature hazardous gas treatments, state of the art high-efficiency PM filters still lack thermal decomposition ability for organic PM pollutants, such as soot from coal-fired power plants and waste-combustion incinerators, resulting in frequent replacement, high cost, and second-hand pollution. In this manuscript, we propose a bottom-up synthesis method to make the first all-thermal-catalyst air filter (ATCAF).

Clinical Features of Breast Cancer in South Korean Patients with Germline Gene Mutations.

Purpose: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal cancer syndrome caused by a germline mutation in the gene. Breast cancer in LFS patients is of various subtypes; however, limited data are available on the clinicopathological features of these subtypes and their appropriate treatments. This study aimed to review the clinical features and treatments for breast cancer in South Korean patients with germline mutations.

A sensitive and selective voltammetric biosensor composed of layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium)-wrapped oxidized single-walled carbon nanotubes (PDDA-oSWCNTs), negatively charged serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)-specific aptamer, and tyrosinase on Au nanoparticles deposited screen printed carbon electrode was developed for measurement of 5-HT. Surface characteristics of 5-HT biosensor were explored using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The respective effects of 5-HT-specific aptamer and oSWCNTs on the detection of 5-HT were investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV).

Does chemotherapy or radiotherapy affect the postoperative complication in breast cancer patients who underwent immediate breast reconstruction with tissue expander?

Background: Immediate breast reconstruction with tissue expander in breast cancer patients who were expected to receive adjuvant therapy, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, has been a topic of debate. Postoperative complications from tissue expander procedures can delay the timing of adjuvant treatment and subsequently increase the probability of recurrence. The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of chemotherapy and radiotherapy on postoperative complications in patients who underwent immediate reconstruction (IR) using tissue expander.

A cross-sectional study investigating the relationship between handgrip strength with multimorbidity in Korean adults: Findings from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VI-VII (2014-2017).

To date research investigating the associations between handgrip strength and multimorbidity when stratifying by age and sex is limited. Furthermore, this is the first study in a Korean population, and the first to include adults ≥ 19 years of age. Here we investigated the associations between handgrip strength and multimorbidity in Korean adults aged ≥ 19 years.

Trends in Risk-Reducing Mastectomy and Risk-Reducing Salpingo-Oophorectomy in Korean Carriers of the Mutation.

Purpose: mutations are associated with risks of breast and ovarian cancer. In Korea, incidences of genetic testing and risk-reducing surgery (RRS) have increased with insurance coverage and the Angelina Jolie effect. The aim of this study was to identify trends in RRS performed in Korean women with the mutation.

Understanding Excess Li Storage beyond LiC in Reduced Dimensional Scale Graphene.

A phenomenon is observed in which the electrochemical performances of porous graphene electrodes show unexpectedly increasing capacities in the Li storage devices. However, despite many studies, the cause is still unclear. Here, we systematically present the reason for the capacity enhancements of the pristine graphene anode under functional group exclusion through morphological control and crystal structure transformation.
