Electronic structures of iron in glasses are essential for unraveling the effect of transition metals on amorphous networks and controlling the electro-optical and transport properties of advanced glasses and amorphous energy-storing materials. The electronic configurations around iron in glasses, however, remain not well understood due to the structural disorders arising from multiple iron species with distinct valence, coordination, and spin states. Here, the first 1s3p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) for oxide glasses identifies hidden electronic configurations for Fe and Fe in amorphous networks.

Article Synopsis
  • Endometrial cancer is a serious gynecological issue, and the study focused on the role of TBK1, a kinase involved in inflammation and immunity, in this cancer type.
  • Research found that low TBK1 expression is linked to better patient outcomes, and inhibiting TBK1 with amlexanox reduced cancer cell growth and migration.
  • The effects of amlexanox were shown to work through the AKT/NF-κB signaling pathway, suggesting a new direction for cancer treatments targeting TBK1 in endometrial cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • Certain cancers, like glioblastoma (GBM), show resistance to immune therapies due to low mutation rates and a lack of immune response features, prompting research into enhancing T cells that possess stem-like properties.
  • Studies in mice tested the effectiveness of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy combined with strategies to maintain the activity of these stem-like T cells, revealing improvements in survival and immune response.
  • Results indicated that combining anti-PD-1 therapy with other treatments significantly increases the effectiveness of CD8 T cells, with the presence of tumor-specific memory T cells exhibiting strong stemness driving this enhanced antitumor response.

Background/aims: : Endoscopic papillectomy (EP) is increasingly used as an alternative to surgery for managing benign ampullary neoplasms. However, post-EP resection margins are often positive or indeterminate, and there is no consensus on the management of ampullary adenomas with positive or indeterminate margins after EP. This study was designed to compare the long-term outcomes between resected margin-negative (RMN) and resected margin-positive/indeterminate (RMPI) groups and to identify factors associated with clinical outcomes.

Background And Aims: Endoscopic multiple plastic stents are an established first-line treatment for anastomotic biliary stricture (ABS) management after liver transplantation (LT). Fully covered self-expandable metallic stents (FCSEMSs) have recently been used with favorable outcomes, but long-term treatment outcomes remain an issue for ABS. We evaluated the long-term outcomes of FCSEMS for the management of refractory ABS after LT.

Although the incidence of infection has recently increased significantly, treatment is difficult because this bacterium is resistant to most anti-tuberculosis drugs. In particular, is often resistant to available macrolide antibiotics, so therapeutic options are extremely limited. Hence, there is a pressing demand to create effective drugs or therapeutic regimens for infections.

Background And Aims: Placement of a self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) across the duodenal major papilla carries a risk of duodenobiliary reflux (DBR). The suprapapillary method of stent placement may reduce DBR and improve stent patency compared with the transpapillary method. This study compared the clinical outcomes between the suprapapillary and transpapillary methods for distal malignant biliary obstruction (DMBO).

Endometrial receptivity is a complex process that prepares the uterine endometrium for embryo implantation; insufficient endometrial receptivity is one of the causes of implantation failure. Here, we analyzed the microRNA expression profiles of exosomes derived from both receptive (RL95-2) and non-receptive (AN3-CA) endometrial epithelial cell (EEC) lines to identify exosomal miRNAs closely linked to endometrial receptivity. Among the 466 differentially expressed miRNAs, miR-205-5p was the most highly expressed in exosomes secreted from receptive RL95-2 cells.
