Neuromodulatory facilitation of long-term synaptic plasticity is important in learning, memory, and experience-dependent cortical plasticity. Although muscarinic-induced long-term depression (mLTD) in the visual cortex is well known, its cellular mechanisms are not fully understood yet. Since endocannabinoid signaling mediates presynaptic expression of LTD in various brain areas including the primary visual cortex of rats, we investigated the involvement of endocannabinoids in the induction of mLTD in different dendritic compartments of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons.

Objectives: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are effective in the prevention and treatment of thromboembolism; however, they are associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of gastroprotective agents (GPAs) in reducing the risk of UGIB in patients receiving DOACs.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 2076 patients who received DOACs for the prevention or treatment of thromboembolic events between January 2008 and July 2016.

Article Synopsis
  • With the aging population, the study focuses on the effectiveness of surgical treatment for elderly patients (≥80 years) diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer, which remains a controversial issue.
  • Analyzed data from 147 patients indicated that those undergoing surgical resection had significantly better 3-year overall survival rates compared to those receiving supportive care; 42.1% vs 4% for patients aged 80-85, and 36.4% vs 8% for those aged 86 and older.
  • While surgical treatment showed better prognoses particularly for patients aged 80-85, caution is advised for extreme-elderly patients (≥86 years) regarding the risks and benefits of surgery.

Background/aims: Intranasal mupirocin and chlorhexidine bathing are candidate strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In Korea, intranasal mupirocin is not available, and mupirocin ointment, an over-the-counter drug, has been used indiscriminately. Furthermore, because it is covered by health insurance, mupirocin is easy to prescribe within hospitals.

Presenilins (PS1 and PS2) are multifunctional proteins involved in a diverse array of molecular and cellular functions, including proteolysis, development, neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, ion channel regulation and phospholipid metabolism. Mutations in presenilin genes are responsible for the majority of Familial Alzheimer disease (FAD). Consequently, FAD-associated mutations in genes encoding PS1 or PS2 lead to several key cellular phenotypes, including alterations in proteolysis of β-amyloid precursor protein (APP) and Ca(2+) entry.
