Ruminal microbes catabolise feed carbohydrates mainly into SCFA, methane (CH), and carbon dioxide (CO), with predictable relationships between fermentation end products and net microbial increase. We used a closed batch culture system, incubating grass and maize silages, and measured total gas production at 8 and 24 h, as well as the truly degraded substrate, the net production of SCFA, CH, and microbial biomass at 24 h, and investigated the impact of silage type and inoculum microbial mass on fermentation direction. Net microbial yield was negatively correlated with total gas at 8 h (P < 0•001), but not at 24 h (P = 0•052), and negatively correlated with CH production (P < 0•001).

Uterine malformations significantly affect the reproduction process, and such anomalies can affect the progression and prognosis of a pregnancy. A bicornuate uterus is a rare congenital uterine anomaly that occurs due to a defect in the fusion of Müllerian ducts. It is associated with severe maternal and fetal complications, such as uterine rupture, vascular-related pathologies, preterm labor and birth, recurrent early or late loss of pregnancy, and fetal growth restriction.

This case report discusses a complex medical scenario involving a 25-year-old female patient initially diagnosed with acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) who later developed symptoms indicative of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). The transition from uncomplicated HAV to impending subacute hepatic failure and autoimmune overlap syndrome highlights the importance of vigilant monitoring and a comprehensive diagnostic approach. The patient's medical evaluation revealed autoantibodies, elevated IgG levels, and liver biopsy findings consistent with steatohepatitis.

Replacing fishmeal, a finite resource with high market demand, in the diet of carnivorous rainbow trout with proteins from alternative sources may be a challenge for these fish. Therefore, this study investigated whether replacing fishmeal with protein derived from Hermetia illucens or Arthrospira platensis could promote disease susceptibility in local trout populations with different growth performance. This was assessed in vitro by measuring susceptibility to infection with the viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) or the bacterium Yersinia ruckeri.

Optimization and monitoring of bioprocesses requires the measurement of several process parameters and quality attributes. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques such as those coupled to gas chromatography (GCMS) and liquid Chromatography (LCMS) enable the simultaneous measurement of hundreds of metabolites with high sensitivity. When applied to spent media, such metabolome analysis can help determine the sequence of substrate uptake and metabolite secretion, consequently facilitating better design of initial media and feeding strategy.

Stem respiration is a quantitatively important, but poorly understood component of ecosystem carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, a dynamic stem gas exchange system for quantifying real-time stem carbon dioxide (CO) efflux (E) is not commercially available resulting in limited observations based on the static method where air is recirculated through a stem enclosure. The static method has limited temporal resolution, suffers from condensation issues, requires a leak-free enclosure, which is often difficult to verify in the field, and requires physically removing the chamber or flushing it with ambient air before starting each measurement.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed the risks related to maternal obesity (BMI ≥30) during pregnancy and the postpartum period among 2972 pregnant women at a hospital in Bahrain.
  • Key findings indicate that higher BMI is linked to increased age, high parity, a history of miscarriages, and a greater risk of developing conditions like hypertension and antepartum hemorrhage.
  • Despite these risks, high BMI patients did not show an increased likelihood of gestational diabetes, induction of labor, or cesarean births, but they faced longer hospital stays after delivery.
