Remote Teaching and School Refusal Behavior - Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

When the Norwegian government closed down schools and kindergartens in response to the increased spread of COVID-19, the use of homeschooling raised concerns about students with school refusal behavior and the school system's ability to address their special needs in these circumstances. Six students referred to the school absenteeism team were interviewed about their circumstances, using an author-developed interview. The results indicate that the students rated homeschooling as very satisfactory.

Effects of Cardiac Rehabilitation on Physical Fitness, Physical Function, and Self-reported Outcomes in Patients ≥80 yr: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL.

Purpose: The beneficial effects of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are well known, but patients ≥80 yr have been less studied. The aim was to evaluate the effects of CR on patients with ACS ≥80 yr on peak cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), physical function, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) compared with a control group.

Methods: A total of 26 patients with ACS, median age 82 (81, 84) yr, were randomized to hospital-based CR combined with a home-based exercise program (CR group) or to a control group (C) for 4 mo.

Position specificity in the genus ().

To study position specificity in the insect-parasitic fungal genus (), we sampled corixid hosts (Corixidae, Heteroptera) in southern Scandinavia. We detected thalli in five different positions on the hosts. Thalli from the various positions grouped in four distinct clusters in the resulting gene trees, distinctly so in the ITS and LSU of the nuclear ribosomal DNA, less so in the SSU of the nuclear ribosomal DNA and the mitochondrial ribosomal DNA.

Long-term effects of footshock and social defeat on anxiety-like behaviours in rats: relationships to pre-stressor plasma corticosterone concentration.

We compared the consequences of two stressors, 'unnatural' inescapable footshocks (IFSs) and 'natural' social defeat (SD), on behaviours typically sensitive to stress [sucrose preference, open field (OF), elevated plus maze (EPM) and acoustic startle responses (ASRs)] and the association with pre-stressor plasma corticosterone concentration. After initial blood sampling, rats (n = 20 per group) were exposed to either 10 IFSs (1 mA intensity, 5 s duration each) or to 1 h SD (defeat by an aggressive resident male rat and further exposure but separated in a small cage) or to control procedures (handling). Rats were tested once for ASR (day 19), while the other behavioural tests were applied once weekly for 3 weeks.

Change in blood pressure during hospitalisation for acute heart failure predicts mortality.

Objective: In patients with acute heart failure (HF) there is an inverse relation between blood pressure (BP) and mortality but the prognostic impact of the change in BP between admission and discharge is not known. The primary objective was to study the impact of the change in BP during a hospitalisation for acute HF on prognosis.

Design: We studied 208 consecutive patients admitted with acute heart failure and discharged alive, age 77 ± 10 years, 49.

Wild birds of declining European species are dying from a thiamine deficiency syndrome.

Wild birds of several species are dying in large numbers from an idiopathic paralytic disease in the Baltic Sea area. Here, we demonstrate strong relationships between this disease, breeding failure, and thiamine (vitamin B(1)) deficiency in eggs, pulli, and full-grown individuals. Thiamine is essential for vertebrates, and its diphosphorylated form functions as a cofactor for several life sustaining enzymes, whereas the triphosphorylated form is necessary for the functioning of neuronal membranes.

One- vs. five-session treatment of dental phobia: a randomized controlled study.

Unlabelled: Forty participants fulfilling the DSM-IV criteria for dental phobia were randomly assigned to a waitlist group, one-session or five-session exposure treatment. Assessment occurred pre-, post-waitlist/treatment, and after 1 year. Mean avoidance of dental care before treatment was 11.

Dredging associated effects: maternally transferred pollutants and DNA adducts in feral fish.

This study reports on the bioavailability, maternal transfer, and genotoxicity in feral fish of organic sediment pollutants. Northern pike (Esox lucius) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) were caught in a polluted bay before and during dredging activities and from reference areas. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in ovulating eggs to investigate if the bay sediment posed a threat to early life-stages of fish.

Basic physiological biomarkers in adult female perch (Perca fluviatilis) in a chronically polluted gradient in the Stockholm recipient (Sweden).

By measuring a battery of basic physiological biomarkers and the concentration of SigmaDDT in adult female perch (Perca fluviatilis), an assumed aquatic pollution gradient was confirmed, with the city of Stockholm (Sweden) as a point source of anthropogenic substances. The investigation included an upstream gradient, westwards through Lake Mälaren (46 km), and a downstream gradient, eastwards through the Stockholm archipelago (84 km). The results indicated a severe pollution situation in central Stockholm, with poor health status of the perch: retarded growth, increased frequency of sexually immature females, low gonadosomatic index, and disturbed visceral fat metabolism.

The distribution and relative toxic potential of organic chemicals in a PCB contaminated bay.

For reliable monitoring of environmental improvement, the PCB contaminated bay Orserumsviken on Sweden's Baltic coast was investigated prior to remediation. We examined PCB congener patterns and the relative toxic potential of PCBs in extracts of three matrices: bottom sediment, settling particulate matter and the dissolved phase (obtained from semi-permeable membrane devices). Congener patterns were similar in all matrices.

A bio-effect directed fractionation study for toxicological and chemical characterization of organic compounds in bottom sediment.

The major aim of this study was to characterize toxic organic compounds in bottom sediments from a PCB polluted bay. To overcome difficulties in pinpointing toxicants in complex environmental samples we applied a bio-effect directed (BED) fractionation approach and investigated the relationships between aromaticity, teratogenicity, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) mediated toxicity. Hepatic ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activities and malformations were investigated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae exposed by injecting sediment extract and fractions (separated by their degree of aromaticity) thereof into newly fertilized eggs.

Proactive sensitizing effects of acute stress on acoustic startle responses and experimentally induced colitis in rats: relationship to corticosterone.

In humans, some individuals develop a syndrome after trauma (post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD) characterized by increased startle responses and lower than normal cortisol secretion. We explored a rat model using the acoustic startle response (ASR) as a behavioral indicator of the effect of a short series of shocks. Because gastrointestinal disorders have been associated with prior stress, we also studied the rats' vulnerability to a chemically-induced colitis.

Global accounting of PCBs in the continental shelf sediments.

The recycling longevity of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) within the global environment is set by their permanent removal through processes such as degradation and burial in geological reservoirs. More than 90% of the global sediment burial of organic carbon (OC) occurs on the continental shelves, representing < 10% of the earth's ocean area. The propensity of HOCs to associate with organic matter, and the proximity of most population centers and thus presumed source areas to coastal regions, led us to investigate shelf sediments as a depository of significance for global HOC budgets.

Quality of fixed prosthodontics after twenty-two years.

After an observation period of 22 years, this study was conducted to clinically examine and interview patients who in 1984 and 1989 had participated in similar investigations regarding the quality, over time. of treatments with fixed partial dentures. The patients were examined by two standardized and experienced clinicians using thc California Dental Association quality rating system, their results indicating that after 22 years the overall survival rates were 46.

Honig's model of working memory and brain activation: an fMRI study.

The present study investigated changes in neuronal activation with fMRI related to Honig's model of working memory, which is much less studied compared with other working memory models. In contrast to other studies which have applied recognition procedures, the primary aim with the present study was to examine brain activation when subjects had to continuously recall and forget items held in working memory. The results showed that the mid-ventrolateral frontal cortex was particularly activated in the left hemisphere, whereas the mid-dorsolateral frontal cortex was particularly activated in the right hemisphere during execution of the working memory task.

Social inequality in oral health and use of dental care in Sweden.

Methods: Cross-sectional study based on interview data on two randomly sampled sequential populations consisting of 7,610 Swedish adult (25-64 years) residents and 4,315 children (3-15 years) in their households from the Survey of Living Conditions 1996-97, and 7,649 adult Swedish residents (25-64 years) from the survey of 1988-89.

A controlled study of oral self-care and self-perceived oral health in type 2 diabetic patients.

A controlled study was carried out in mid-Sweden with the aim of comparing oral self-care and self-perceived oral health in 102 randomly sampled type 2 diabetic patients with that of 102 age-and-gender-matched non-diabetic controls. Oral health variables were also related to glycemic control (HbA1c), duration, anti-diabetic treatment, and late complications. Questionnaires were used to collect data on oral self-care and self-perceived oral health.

Restorative treatment decisions on occlusal caries in Scandinavia.

In order to map variations in the operative treatment threshold for occlusal caries, a pre-coded questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 759 dentists in Norway, 923 in Sweden, and 173 in the Danish Public Dental Health Service inquiring about caries and treatment strategies. A further intention was to explore the type of operative treatment and filling material dentists in Scandinavia would use given an occlusal lesion in the lower 2nd molar in a 20-year-old. It is found that close to 70% of dentists in the 3 countries would put off carrying out operative treatment of occlusal caries until they registered a moderately sized cavity and/or any radiolucency in dentin.
