Various species of establish compatible symbiotic relationships with soybean () leading to the formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules in roots. The formation of functional nodules is mediated through complex developmental and transcriptional reprogramming that involves the activity of thousands of plant genes. However, host transcriptome that differentiate between functional or non-functional nodules remain largely unexplored.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the link between tuberculosis (TB) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in South Korea, utilizing data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey and focusing on the 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disorder (ASCVD) risk among TB survivors.
  • - Out of 69,331 participants, 4% were identified as post-TB survivors, showing a significantly higher 10-year ASCVD risk compared to healthy controls—40.46% vs. 24.00%—with factors like age, smoking, income level, diabetes, and depression further contributing to increased CVD risk in this group.
  • - The study concludes that TB survivors have a considerably elevated risk of cardiovascular issues, emphasizing the

Despite the high quality of soybean protein, raw soybeans and soybean meal cannot be directly included in animal feed mixtures due to the presence of Kunitz (KTi) and Bowman-Birk protease inhibitors (BBis), which reduces animal productivity. Heat treatment can substantially inactivate trypsin and chymotrypsin inhibitors (BBis), but such treatment is energy-intensive, adds expense, and negatively impacts the quality of seed proteins. As an alternative approach, we have employed CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to create mutations in genes to drastically lower the protease inhibitor content in soybean seed.

An evaluation of the persistence of symptoms following COVID-19 in economically active young and middle-aged adults is crucial due to its significant socioeconomic impact resulting from compromised work performance. A prospective, multicenter study at 12 South Korean hospitals from January to December 2022 involved telephone interviews along with validated questionnaires. Among 696 participants with a median age of 32 and no prior diagnoses, 30% of participants experienced persistent fatigue, while 21.

  • - The REST trial aims to assess the safety and effectiveness of remimazolam for moderate sedation during endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), comparing it against standard midazolam treatments.
  • - The study will enroll 330 patients with suspected lung cancer lesions across four university hospitals, randomly assigning them to receive either remimazolam or two types of midazolam for the procedure.
  • - Through this trial, researchers hope to establish improved sedation practices for EBUS-TBNA, potentially enhancing patient experiences and outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the type III secretion system (T3SS) in the rhizobial strain NGR234 and its significance in rhizobia-legume symbiosis, highlighting how calcium influences T3SS functions.
  • Calcium treatment led to the differential expression of 65 genes, notably those related to amino acid and carbohydrate transport, with one specific gene (NGR_b22780) showing a 17-fold increase in expression compared to conditions without calcium.
  • Interestingly, while calcium enhanced the expression of various transporters and enzymes, it also reduced the synthesis of nod factors and the production of key T3SS proteins, suggesting a complex regulatory role of calcium in this biological interaction.

Background And Objective: Patients with tuberculosis and diabetes have a higher risk of unfavourable anti-tuberculosis treatment outcomes. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of various diabetes statuses on the outcomes of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Methods: Among the patients with pulmonary tuberculosis enrolled in the Korea Tuberculosis Cohort (KTBC) registry and the multicentre prospective cohort study of pulmonary tuberculosis (COSMOTB), those with diabetes and complicated diabetes were identified.

In this study, we have examined the feasibility of using elemental sulfur content of soybean seeds as a proxy for the overall sulfur amino acid content of soybean seeds. Earlier, we have identified by high throughput ionomic phenotyping several high and low sulfur containing soybean lines from the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection. Here, we measured the cysteine and methionine content of select soybean lines by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Curcuma longa, known as turmeric, is an herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the genus Curcuma. It is dispersed throughout tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Since ancient times, turmeric has been used as an ethnomedicinal plant in the Ayurvedic system, particularly in Asian countries.

  • Remimazolam is an ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine that shows quicker recovery and sedation compared to midazolam during bronchoscopy, according to a limited number of studies.
  • In a prospective randomized study, remimazolam resulted in significantly shorter times to peak sedation and full alertness than midazolam, along with higher satisfaction ratings among patients not undergoing biopsies.
  • While the overall adverse effects were similar between both drugs, midazolam required more antidote administrations, suggesting that remimazolam may be a safer option for sedation in bronchoscopic procedures.

  • - This study investigated the risk factors for drug-induced liver injury (DILI) during antituberculosis treatment (ATT), particularly focusing on metabolic disorders like insulin resistance, hypertension, obesity, and dyslipidemia.
  • - Conducted in Korea from 2019 to 2021, the research included 684 drug-susceptible TB patients, revealing that 52 (7.6%) experienced DILI, with a significant majority having metabolic disorders.
  • - Findings indicated that metabolic disorders and low serum albumin levels significantly elevated the risk of DILI but did not negatively impact the overall treatment outcomes for TB patients.

  • - The study investigates the link between oral health issues and airflow limitation (AFL) in individuals, revealing that poor oral health is often found alongside AFL, which is defined by specific lung function criteria.
  • - Analyzing data from a large nationwide survey involving over 31,000 participants, it found a higher prevalence of dental problems, such as periodontitis and a high DMFT index, in those with AFL compared to those without.
  • - Results indicate that fewer permanent teeth and the use of dentures are significantly associated with AFL and its severity, highlighting the need for healthcare providers to consider oral health when treating patients with respiratory conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Impaired airway clearance in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis causes frequent bacterial infection, chronic inflammation, and progressive tissue destruction. We aimed to evaluate whether an oscillating positive expiratory pressure (OPEP) device could allow effective sputum expectoration and prevent acute exacerbations in patients with bronchiectasis who had frequent acute exacerbations. This open-label, single-arm, prospective study included 17 patients who experienced three or more acute exacerbations in the past year.

Rapid and accurate measurement of trypsin inhibitor is critical for soy processors to assess the quality of soy meal. Currently, trypsin inhibitor activity is measured using the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) and the American Association of Cereal Chemists International (AACCI) approved method. We have modified and improved the AACCI/AOCS approved method resulting in the elimination of several time-consuming steps and drastically reducing the assay volume.

The salt-soluble globulins, glycinins (11S globulin), and β-conglycinins (7S globulin), are the most abundant seed proteins of soybean seeds. Together, these two groups of proteins account for 60-70% of total soybean seed proteins. Proteomic assessment of the less abundant soybean seed proteins using general isolation protocols is challenging due to the overwhelming abundance of storage proteins.
