Astrocytes, characterized by a satellite-like morphology, are the most abundant type of glia in the central nervous system. Their main functions have been thought to be limited to providing homeostatic support for neurons, but recent studies have revealed that astrocytes actually actively interact with local neural circuits and play a crucial role in information processing and generating physiological and behavioral responses. Here, we review the emerging roles of astrocytes in many brain regions, particularly by focusing on intracellular changes in astrocytes and their interactions with neurons at the molecular and neural circuit levels.

The gene associated with retinoid-interferon-induced mortality-19 (GRIM-19) plays several significant roles in cellular processes, including ATP synthesis, reactive oxygen species formation, and the regulation of glycolytic enzyme activity, which are closely related to the pathophysiological mechanisms of epilepsy. Therefore, we investigated the expression pattern of GRIM-19 in the CA1 area of the hippocampus in 8-week-old male C57BL/6 mice following pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE). Neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 area was prominently observed at 4 and 7 days after SE, and astrocytes and microglia became progressively activated beginning at 1 day after SE.

Gene associated with retinoid-interferon-induced mortality-19 (GRIM-19) is a subunit of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I that has a significant effect on ATP production. The brain is particularly susceptible to ATP deficiency due to its limited energy storage capability and its high rate of oxygen consumption. Thus, GRIM-19 might be involved in regulating ATP level in the brain or cell death caused by several neurological disorders.
