The escalating prevalence of diabetes mellitus, projected to affect over 700 million by 2045, underscores the urgent need for effective management and prevention strategies, with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) constituting over 90% of these cases globally. The present meta-analysis aims to rigorously evaluate the potential of vitamin D supplementation in mitigating the onset of T2DM, amidst the backdrop of its biological plausibility yet inconclusive evidence regarding its efficacy in reducing new incidences of the disease. A comprehensive literature search up to December 2023 in MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library, employing a strategy focused on diabetes and vitamin D, identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that explore the impact of vitamin D supplementation on T2DM onset in adults with impaired glucose regulation, incorporating quality assessment via the Cochrane ROB2 tool and utilizing meta-analysis with RevMan Web to evaluate effect magnitude and heterogeneity.

Article Synopsis
  • The advent of the da Vinci SP robotic system is increasing the popularity of robotic techniques, particularly the new single-port robotic areolar (SPRA) approach for thyroid surgery, which was compared to the older bilateral axillary breast approach (BABA).
  • In a year-long study analyzing 111 SPRA and 159 BABA surgeries, it was found that SPRA was predominantly performed on women and resulted in a lower body mass index (BMI) for patients.
  • Results showed that SPRA had shorter flap formation time, less drainage post-surgery, and shorter hospital stays, with no significant differences in postoperative complications between the two methods, suggesting SPRA is a less invasive surgical option.

DNA methylation is one of the most extensively studied epigenetic regulatory mechanisms, known to play crucial roles in various organisms. It has been implicated in the regulation of gene expression and chromatin changes, ranging from global alterations during cell state transitions to locus-specific modifications. 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) is produced by a major oxidation, from 5-methylcytosine (5mC), catalyzed by the ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes, and is gradually being recognized for its significant role in genome regulation.

In the South Korean study to prevent cognitive impairment and protect BRAIN health through lifestyle intervention in at-risk elderly people (SUPERBRAIN), we evaluated the impact of a 24-week facility-based multidomain intervention (FMI) and home-based MI (HMI) on white matter integrity. Among 152 participants, aged 60-79 years without dementia but with ≥1 modifiable dementia risk factor, 19 FMI, 20 HMI, and 16 controls underwent brain MRI at baseline and 24 weeks. Between the intervention and control groups, we compared changes in fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD) at regions-of-interest (ROI) including the cingulum cingulate gyrus (CgC), cingulum hippocampus (CgH), superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), as well as the uncinate fasciculus (UF).

Germline commitment following primordial germ cell (PGC) specification during early human development establishes an epigenetic programme and competence for gametogenesis. Here we follow the progression of nascent PGC-like cells derived from human embryonic stem cells in vitro. We show that switching from BMP signalling for PGC specification to Activin A and retinoic acid resulted in DMRT1 and CDH5 expression, the indicators of migratory PGCs in vivo.
