Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by high incidence and fatality rates worldwide. In our exploration of prognostic factors in HCC, the 26s proteasome subunit, non-ATPase 1 (PSMD1) protein emerged as a significant contributor, demonstrating its potential as a therapeutic target in this aggressive cancer. PSMD1 is a subunit of the 19S regulatory particle in the 26S proteasome complex; the 19S particle controls the deubiquitination of ubiquitinated proteins, which are then degraded by the proteolytic activity of the complex.

Many GPCRs are abnormally activated in cancers and have emerged as therapeutic targets for cancer. Neuropeptide FF receptor 2 (NPFFR2) is a GPCR that helps regulate pain and modulates the opioid system; however, its function remains unknown in cancers.

While mutations in TMEM165 are known to cause human 'congenital disorders of glycosylation', a recessive autosomal metabolic disease, the potential association of this protein with human cancer development has not been explored to date. In the present study, we revealed that TMEM165 is overexpressed in HCC and its depletion weakens the invasive activity of cancer cells through suppression of matrix metalloproteinase‑2 (MMP‑2) expression.

While the participation of PRMT5 in cancer progression has been increasingly documented, its association with the invasive phenotype currently remains poorly understood. In the present study, we revealed that PRMT5 is overexpressed in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and in colon cancer and its depletion leads to the suppression of cell invasive activity via the reduction of the expression of MMP-2.

Alterations in mitochondrial respiration contribute to the development and progression of cancer via abnormal biogenesis, including generation of reactive oxygen species. Ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase hinge protein (UQCRH) consists of the cytochrome bc1 complex serving respiration in mitochondria. In the present study, we analyzed UQCRH abnormalities in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its association with clinical outcomes of patients.

In particular, to date, few studies have investigated the correlation between low-dose radiation and disease development. Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory airway disease that is recognized as a major public health problem.

Cancer stem cells are associated with tumorigenesis, tumor progression, recurrence, metastasis, and poor prognosis in several malignancies including HCC. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression pattern of cancer stem cell markers in ChC and HCC, and to evaluate whether this pattern correlated to patient prognosis.

To overcome the limitations of individual gene-based analysis, we applied a pathway-based approach for analysis of HCC recurrence.
Results: By implementing a permutation-based semi-supervised principal component analysis algorithm using the optimal principal component, we selected sixty-four pathways associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive HCC recurrence (p < 0.
Purpose: In colorectal cancer, the role of detecting free malignant cells from peritoneal lavage is currently unclear. In this study, we investigated the positive rate of free malignant cells in peritoneal lavage fluid and their predictive value for prognosis and peritoneal recurrence after a curative resection.
Methods: From October 2009 to December 2011, in a prospective manner, we performed cytologic examinations of peritoneal lavage fluid obtained just after the abdominal incision from 145 patients who underwent curative surgery for colorectal cancer.
Background: Aberrant Hedgehog (HH) signaling activation is important in cancer growth and mediates the interaction between cancer cells and the surrounding stromal cells. This study investigated the role of HH signaling on the growth of cholangiocarcinoma (CC), focusing on the interaction of CC cells with stromal cells.
Methods: To evaluate the interaction between human CC cells (SNU-1196, SNU-246, SNU-308, SNU-1079, and HuCCT-1) and stromal cells (hepatic stellate cell line, Lx-2), co-culture proliferation, migration, and invasion assays were performed.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features of and the prognosis for colorectal cancers (CRCs) with microsatellite instabilities (MSIs).
Methods: Between 2006 and 2009, genotyping was performed on 245 patients with stage II/III CRCs to establish the MSI status. The clinicopathologic differences and the prognostic value of MSI were analyzed.
Purpose: We did this retrospective study to explore the association between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation and clinical features in postoperative recurrent female non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Materials And Methods: We reviewed clinical data on 86 female patients who had postoperative recurrent disease between December 1992 and July 2007. The start of tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy was treated as a censoring event.
Purpose: We performed this study to explore the association of computed tomography (CT) findings with outcomes of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with tyrosin kinase inhibitor (TKI) such as gefitinib or erlotinib.
Materials And Methods: We analyzed outcomes for 240 patients according to primary tumor (T), regional nodal (N) staging and diffuse small pulmonary metastases (DSPM) at the initial presentation. Tests for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation were performed in 92 patients.
Purpose: Infection with Helicobacter pylori is an important risk factor for gastric cancer in humans. We compared the clinicopathologic features of gastric cancer patients based on H. pylori infection.

CD44s is a known prognostic factor in various cancers, due to its involvement in tumor cell growth, invasion and metastasis. Its prognostic role, however, is debated because it can be a positive or negative prognostic factor depending on tumor type and is still an ambiguous prognostic indicator in other cancers, especially hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

A structurally invasive focus is necessary to diagnose carcinoma for most Western pathologists, but Japanese pathologists make a diagnosis of cancer based on severe dysplastic cytologic atypia irrespective of the presence of invasion. Although the Vienna classification was introduced to reduce diagnostic discrepancies, it has been difficult to adopt due to different concepts for gastric epithelial neoplastic lesions.

In this research, we tried to investigate the clinical features of MMS and ITC and to prove any correlation with prognosis.
Methods: The research pool was 124 colorectal cancer patients who underwent a curative resection from April 2005 to November 2009.
Background: The tissue environment in the region of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) influences both vascular invasion and recurrence. Thus, HCC patient prognosis depends on the characteristics not only of the tumor but also those of adjacent surrounding liver tissue.
Materials And Methods: Expression profiles of both tumor and adjacent liver tissue following curative resection were measured to discriminate 56 hepatitis B virus-positive HCC patients into subgroups based on survival risk.

Purpose: In Korea, there are few reports regarding the infiltration of fat tissue in pancreatic parenchyma in surgically resected organs. It is necessary to ascertain the correlation between the presence of fat tissue in the resection margin of the pancreas and the surgery outcome.

alpha-methylacyl-coenzyme A racemase (AMACR) is a recently discovered biomarker that is shown to be overexpressed in some prostatic carcinomas and associated with prostatic cancer progression. Given that AMACR plays an important role in peroxisomal beta-oxidation of branched-chain fatty acids from red meat and dairy products, and that consumption of red meat may increase risk of developing colon cancer as suggested by epidemiological studies, it is plausible to explore the function of AMACR in colorectal carcinoma. A few previous studies have indeed observed overexpression of AMACR in 45% to 69% of the colorectal carcinomas.

Granulocytosis occurs in 40% of patients with lung and gastrointestinal cancers, 20% of patients with breast cancer, 30% of patients with brain tumor and ovarian cancer and 10% of patients with renal cell carcinoma. Granulocytosis occurs because of production of G-CSF, GM-CSF and IL-6. Uterine cervical carcinoma with granulocytosis as a paraneoplastic syndrome, however, has been rarely reported.
