The islet of Langerhans, functioning as a "mini organ", plays a vital role in regulating endocrine activities due to its intricate structure. Dysfunction in these islets is closely associated with the development of diabetes mellitus (DM). To offer valuable insights for DM research and treatment, various approaches have been proposed to create artificial islets or islet organoids with high similarity to natural islets, under the collaborative effort of biologists, clinical physicians, and biomedical engineers.

Article Synopsis
  • Kisspeptin signaling plays a crucial role in regulating energy balance, particularly through its effects on adipose tissue, which produces and responds to Kisspeptin.
  • Research in mice indicates that adipose Kiss1 gene expression is enhanced by exercise, but its specific impact on energy homeostasis and adaptations to prolonged exercise had not been fully understood before this study.
  • The study found that Kiss1 influences lipid and glucose management, with a greater impact observed in female mice, and its deficiency can reduce muscle protein content related to energy metabolism after extended exercise, suggesting its potential as a new factor for enhancing metabolic responses post-exercise.

The multibasic furin cleavage site at the S1/S2 boundary of the spike protein is a hallmark of SARS-CoV-2 and plays a crucial role in viral infection. However, the mechanism underlying furin activation and its regulation remain poorly understood. Here, we show that GalNAc-T3 and T7 jointly initiate clustered O-glycosylations in the furin cleavage site of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which inhibit furin processing, suppress the incorporation of the spike protein into virus-like-particles and affect viral infection.

The five epidermal growth factor-like domains (EGF) of Eimeria tenella microneme protein 8 (EtMIC8) (EtMIC8-EGF) plays a vital role in host cell attachment and invasion. These processes require interactions between parasite proteins and receptors on the surface of host cells. In this study, five chicken membrane proteins potentially interacting with EtMIC8-EGF were identified using the GST pull-down assay and mass spectrometry analysis, and only chicken (Gallus gallus) epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EPCAM) could bind to EtMIC8-EGF.

Organs-on-chips are microengineered microfluidic living cell culture devices with continuously perfused chambers penetrating to cells. By mimicking the biological features of the multicellular constructions, interactions among organs, vascular perfusion, physicochemical microenvironments, and so on, these devices are imparted with some key pathophysiological function levels of living organs that are difficult to be achieved in conventional 2D or 3D culture systems. In this technology, biomaterials are extremely important because they affect the microstructures and functionalities of the organ cells and the development of the organs-on-chip functions.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the type II strain (Pru) and respiratory viral infections, specifically focusing on the co-infection with PR8 (influenza A/Puerto Rico/8/34). In this study, we found that the number of (Pru) in the lungs of co-infected mice was significantly higher and lesions were more severe than those in the group infected with (Pru) alone, whereas IAV (influenza A virus) copy numbers of co-infected and PR8 alone infected groups were negligible, suggesting that infection with IAV increased the pathogenicity of (Pru) in mice. The invasion and proliferation assays demonstrated no significant effect of co-infection on (Pru) infection or replication in vitro.
