Xenobiotic nucleic acids (XNAs) are artificial genetic polymers with altered structural moieties and useful features, such as enhanced biological and chemical stability. Enzymatic synthesis and efficient labelling of XNAs are crucial for their broader application. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferases (TdTs) have been exploited for the de novo synthesis and labelling of DNA and demonstrated the capability of recognizing various substrates.

While the development of unnatural base pairs (UBPs) has expanded the genetic information capacity of nucleic acids, the production of synthetic alternatives of DNA and RNA has increased the types of genetic information carriers and introduced novel properties and functionalities into nucleic acids. Moreover, the efforts of tailoring DNA polymerases (DNAPs) and RNA polymerases (RNAPs) to be efficient unnatural nucleic acid polymerases have enabled broad application of these unnatural nucleic acids, ranging from production of stable aptamers to evolution of novel catalysts.

Previous studies have shown the production of HAs to be related to yeast, but the correlations between HAs and other microorganisms are rarely reported. In this study, we detected changes in levels of HAs and microbial dynamics during the Huangjiu fermentation process.

Introduction: Chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) is an autophagy-lysosome pathway (ALP) that is different from the other two lysosomal pathways, namely, macroautophagy and microautophagy, and can selectively degrade cytosolic proteins in lysosomes without vesicle formation. CMA activity declines in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, and similar neurotoxicity can occur after methamphetamine (METH) treatment. The relationship between CMA and METH-induced neurotoxicity is not clear.

Methods: We analyzed the data of 44 autopsy cases of cardiac rupture from 2014 to 2017 in our institute, including 11 cases caused by blunt violence with intact pericardium, 4 caused by cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), 9 by myocardial infarction, and 20 by aorta dissection rupture. The gross features and histopathological characteristics of cardiac rupture and pericardial effusion were analyzed and compared.
This report describes a case of blunt cardiac injury and pericardial tamponade after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in a patient with lung cancer, hypertension, and cardiac hypertrophy. Anatomic findings included massive hemorrhage in the pericardium, cardiac hypertrophy, and a superficial contusion with a ruptured blood vessel on the epicardium at the lateral wall of the left ventricle. The patient died of pericardial tamponade secondary to blunt trauma from the tip of the thoracoscopic instrument.

Parasitic diseases are common infectious diseases closely related to poverty, which are mainly endemic in the tropical and subtropical regions. Africa is the major epidemic area of parasitic diseases, and the global burden of malaria and schistosomiasis is over 85% in Africa. This paper reviews the disease burden, regional distribution and control strategies of the main parasitic diseases in Africa, in order to promote the prevention and control of parasitic diseases in this area.

Transmission control had been achieved in China in 2015 after the control efforts for over 60 years. Currently, the remaining core regions endemic for Schistosoma japonicum are mainly located in the marshland and lake regions along the Yangtze River basin.

The control efforts during the past half-decade, notably the wide implementation of the new integrated strategy with emphasis on control of the source of S. japonicum infection across the country since 2004, has greatly reduced S.

In this longitudinal study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary, integrated approach for schistosomiasis elimination in a historically hyper-endemic region in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China over the 10-year period from 2005 through 2014.
Methods: A three-step roadmap for schistosomiasis elimination was designed in the study site, and multidisciplinary, integrated interventions were implemented by the health, agriculture, water resources development, land and resources, and forestry sectors from 2005 to 2014, including chemotherapy for infected individuals, health education, management of the source of Schistosoma japonicum infection, and intermediate host snail control.

This paper described the First Forum on Schistosomiasis Control in China. With "Appropriate technology is essential to schistosomiasis prevention and control" as the topic, the forum shared the main interventions and experiences for schistosomiasis control and elimination, exhibited the recent achievements gained from the development of appropriate technology for schistosomiasis control, showed the technical support of appropriate technology for schistosomiasis elimination, and proposed the priority for the future research and development of appropriate technology for schistosomiasis control and elimination in China. It is considered that the forum builds a bridge for communicating information between the administrative sectors and specialized prevention and control institutions, between research institutions and manufactures, and between experts/professors and grassroots professional staff, and provides a platform to communicate the national schistosomiasis control knowledge of China.
