Background: Bisphosphonates prevent fractures in patients with osteoporosis, but their efficacy in women with osteopenia is unknown. Most fractures in postmenopausal women occur in those with osteopenia, so therapies that are effective in women with osteopenia are needed.

Methods: We conducted a 6-year, double-blind trial involving 2000 women with osteopenia (defined by a T score of -1.

Annual intravenous administration of 5 mg zoledronate decreases fracture risk, but the optimal dosing regimen for zoledronate has not been determined. We set out to evaluate the antiresorptive effects of a single administration of lower doses of zoledronate. A total of 180 postmenopausal women with osteopenia enrolled in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial over 2 years at an academic research center.

Objectives: Previous laboratory studies have identified two dairy fractions, glycomacropeptide (GMP) and G600 milk fat extract (G600), with anti-inflammatory effects in models of acute gout. The aim of this proof-of-concept clinical trial was to test the hypothesis that daily intake of skim milk powder (SMP) enriched with GMP and G600 can prevent gout flares.

Methods: This was a 3-month randomised double-blind controlled trial of milk products for prevention of gout flares.

Context: Annual iv administration of 5 mg zoledronate decreases fracture risk. The skeletal effects of annual treatment with doses of zoledronate under 4 mg have not been assessed.

Objective: Our objective was to determine the skeletal effects of single doses of zoledronate of 5 mg or less.

Objectives: Recent observational studies have highlighted the beneficial role of dairy ingestion in gout prevention. The aims of this study were to determine the acute effects of milk ingestion on serum urate concentrations and examine the mechanisms of these effects.

Methods: This was a short-term randomised controlled crossover trial of milk in 16 healthy male volunteers.
