Plants communicate through volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but real-time monitoring of VOCs for plant intercommunication is not practically possible yet. A nanobionic VOC sensor plant is created to study VOC-mediated plant intercommunication by incorporating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanosensors into a living plant. This sensor allows real-time monitoring of VOC with a sensitivity down to the parts per trillion level.

Recurrent seizures lead to accumulation of the activity-dependent transcription factor ∆FosB in hippocampal dentate granule cells in both mouse models of epilepsy and mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is also associated with increased incidence of seizures. In patients with AD and related mouse models, the degree of ∆FosB accumulation corresponds with increasing severity of cognitive deficits. We previously found that ∆FosB impairs spatial memory in mice by epigenetically regulating expression of target genes such as calbindin that are involved in synaptic plasticity.

Studies show the role of various electrification technologies in providing electricity access to households in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on electricity demand for end-use services such as lighting, cooking, heating, cooling and other appliance use. Background: SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus. Several negative-sense SARS-CoV-2 RNA species, both full-length genomic and subgenomic, are produced transiently during viral replication. Methodologies for rigorously characterising cell tropism and visualising ongoing viral replication at single-cell resolution in histological sections are needed to assess the virological and pathological phenotypes of future SARS-CoV-2 variants.

In this work, a hybrid-phase transition field-effects-transistor (hyper-FET) integrated with phase-transition materials (PTM) and a multi-nanosheet FET (mNS-FET) at the 3 nm technology node were analyzed at the device and circuit level. Through this, a benchmark was performed for presenting device design guidelines and for using ultra-low-power applications. We present an optimization flow considering hyper-FET characteristics at the device and circuit level, and analyze hyper-FET performance according to the phase transition time (TT) and baseline-FET off-leakage current (I) variations of the PTM.

We have produced two types of synthetic nanodiamonds Si- and Si,P-doped and have characterized the thermal susceptibilities of the spectral band of silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers at approximately 740 nm in each case. The covered temperature range from 295 to 350 K is of interest for thermometry in biological systems. Comparison of the relative brightness of the Si- and Si,P-doped crystals shows that phosphorous significantly increases average concentration and homogeneity of distribution of SiV centers in nanodiamonds.

Hexagonal boron nitride is a wide-band-gap van der Waals material that has recently emerged as a promising platform for quantum photonics experiments. In this work, we study the formation and localization of narrowband quantum emitters in large flakes (up to tens of micrometers wide) of hexagonal boron nitride. The emitters can be activated in as-grown hexagonal boron nitride by electron irradiation or high-temperature annealing, and the emitter formation probability can be increased by ion implantation or focused laser irradiation of the as-grown material.

In this retrospective analysis of 10,575 patients who used fentanyl-based intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) after surgery, we evaluated difference between young and elderly patients on their characteristic of adverse effects.We reviewed the data collected from the patients who were provided IV-PCA for pain control following elective surgery under either general or spinal anesthesia between September 2010 and March 2014.
