The objective of our study was to determine optimal treatment parameters and appropriate methods of examination for neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) high-power laser coagulation of the human prostate in relation to power setting and time. Transurethral free-beam laser coagulation was performed with the Side Focus side-firing laser fiber in ten patients prior to planned radical surgery, of whom six underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic lymphadenectomy and laser coagulation 4-9 days prior to open surgery. Depth and volume of coagulated prostatic tissue were measured at power setting/time combinations of 40 W/90 s and 60 W/60 s, respectively, while holding total energy delivery constant.

Purpose: To correlate laser ablation-induced changes in the prostate as depicted at endorectal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with results at histologic examination.

Materials And Methods: In eight patients with prostate carcinoma, visually guided laser ablation was performed during lymphadenectomy. Radical prostate resection was performed 4-9 days (mean, 6.

At the autopsy of a 68 year old man with plasmacytoma of the lambda light chain type we found polygonal interstitial cells with unusual crystalline inclusions, which were not readily identifiable and slightly resembled Leydig cells in conventional microscopy. In electron microscopy these could be identified as plasmacytoma cells, representing a testicular involvement. Comparable cells could be shown in the bone marrow.

The seminal vesicle cyst is a congenital malformation of the male urogenital tract, which seems to be more frequent than originally presumed. It is usually combined with an ipsilateral renal agenesis and an ectopic ureter. Two relevant cases are reported and embryology, major presenting symptoms, diagnostic procedures, differential diagnosis and therapy are extensively discussed.

We present a strategy for the evaluation of numerical copy number changes of DNA segments within a solid tumor genome that allows the correlation of microscopic phenotype with genotype in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor material. Cells from a human testicular germ cell tumor and adjacent tissue areas with normal seminiferous tubules were selected separately from microscopically analyzed histological tissue sections, and DNA was extracted from the selected areas. After universal DNA amplification, the amplification products were subjected to comparative genomic hybridization.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common disease of men and will lead in most cases to micturition difficulties. Up to now 2 or 4 of 10 men in their sixties are operated for BPH. As standard treatment we know the transurethral resection of the prostate and in some cases of very big adenomas the open adenomectomy carried out in a suprapubic or retropubic way.

We analysed 39 prostatic carcinomas for loss of heterozygosity on chromosomal arms 8p, 10q, 16q, 17p and 18q and for mutations in the p53 anti-oncogene. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on 8p was detected in one out of 5 informative tumors, LOH on 16q in 3 out of 21 tumors, LOH on 17p in 2 out of 18 tumors, and LOH on 18q in 2 out of 17 tumors. No deletions were observed on 10q in 14 informative tumors.

A case of papillary renal cell carcinoma in a patient suffering from autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is described. The occurrence of papillary renal cell carcinoma in polycystic kidneys in the literature is reviewed and the implications of operative management and further surveillance in case of a papillary renal cell carcinoma are discussed.

Ninety-five patients with erectile dysfunction underwent standardized cavernosometry and cavernosography. In a first stage, the investigation was performed in each patient without and in a second stage with 60 mg papaverine injected intracavernously. A pathological maintenance flow rate between 20 and 120 ml/min decreased by 55% on average.

Based on a retrospective study concerning the years 1974 to 1987 93 malignant extrahepatic bile duct tumors are being analyzed with regard to its histology, therapy and time of survival. The cases referred to herein are 49 tumors of the gallbladder and 44 bile duct tumors (25 tumors of the hepatic confluation, 10 tumors of the middle and 9 tumors of the distal portion of the bile duct). The middle and the distal hepatic duct tumors with 15.

An account is given in this paper of 480 patients who had been hospitalised for colonic diverticulosis or diverticulitis in the surgical department of the Municipal Waid Hospital of Zurich, between 1970 and 1986. Laparotomy had to be performed on 219 of them (45.6 per cent), among them 84 emergency interventions.
