Surgical resident doctors' perception of their training using Surgical Theatre Educational Environment Measure (STEEM) tool in postgraduate surgical residency training institutions in Nigeria.

Introduction: Postgraduate Medical Education is 'the constellation of learning activities carried out to enable doctors to develop relevant competencies and deeper knowledge in specific subject areas after completion of basic medical education'. The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of surgical resident doctors of their training in accredited institutions in Nigeria, using the Surgical Theatre Educational Environment Measure (STEEM) inventory.

Methods: The study was a cross-sectional observational study that employed the STEEM instrument which was administered online via email to surgical resident doctors in all the surgical residency training institutions in Nigeria accredited by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Client perception of service quality at the outpatient clinics of a General hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.

Introduction: Service quality assessments have assumed increasing importance in the last two decades. They are useful in identifying gaps in services been provided with the ultimate aim of guaranteeing quality assurance. The objective of this study was to assess the client perception of service quality at the outpatient clinics of Randle General hospital, Lagos.

First steps: exploring use of a prospective, office-based registry as the foundation for quality improvement in cardiology training.

Background: Teaching practice-based learning and improvement and systems-based practice are challenging. Cardiology fellows at St John Hospital & Medical Center participate in a national registry of outpatient cardiology care.

Objective: We assessed the use of the registry, hypothesizing that it could serve as an effective foundation for studying ambulatory care, identifying gaps in care, and planning interventions to advance competence in practice-based learning and improvement and systems-based practice.

Race and epicardial fat: the impact of anthropometric measurements, percent body fat and sex.

Objective: Epicardial fat is known to be thicker in White men than in Black men. The impact of sex, % body fat, and other anthropometric measures on epicardial fat thickness has not been described. Therefore we sought to evaluate how the racial differences in epicardial fat thickness would differ by these factors.

Sealed with a kick: a case of posttraumatic coronary artery dissection and cardiomyopathy.

Blunt chest trauma can lead to a variety of cardiac injuries, one of which is nonatherosclerotic myocardial infarction caused by intimal laceration and thrombotic process activation. Here we present a case of anterior myocardial infarction secondary to blunt trauma involving a kick to the chest.

Clinical versus sonographic estimation of foetal weight in southwest Nigeria.

A prospective study was conducted at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, between 3 January and 31May 2004, to compare the accuracy of clinical and ultrasonographic estimation of foetal weight at term. One hundred pregnant women who fulfilled the inclusion criteria had their foetal weight estimated independently using clinical and ultrasonographic methods. Accuracy was determined by percentage error, absolute percentage error, and proportion of estimates within 10% of actual birth-weight (birth-weight of +10%).
