Background: This study investigates daily breast geometry and delivered dose to prone-positioned patients undergoing tangential whole breast radiation therapy (WBRT) on an O-ring linear accelerator with 6X flattening filter free mode (6X-FFF), planned with electronic compensation (ECOMP) method. Most practices rely on skin marks or daily planar image matching for prone breast WBRT. This system provides low dose daily CBCT, which was used to study daily robustness of delivered dose parameters for prone-positioned WBRT.

Introduction A novel on-line adaptive radiotherapy (ART) system based on O-ring linear accelerator (LINAC) and cone-beam CT (CBCT) was evaluated for treatment and management of head & neck (H&N) cancer in an emulated environment accessed via remote desktop connection. In this on-line ART system, organs-at-risk (OARs) and target contours and radiotherapy (RT) plans are semi-automatically generated based on the patient CBCT, expediting a typically hours-long RT planning session to under half an hour. In this paper, we describe our initial experiences with the system and explore optimization strategies to expedite the process further.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using fused deposition modeling (FDM) three-dimensional (3D) printer to generate radiation compensators for high-resolution (~1 mm) intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for small animal radiation treatment. We propose a novel method incorporating 3D-printed compensator molds filled with NaI powder.

Methods: The inverse planning module of the computational environment for radiotherapy research (CERR) software was adapted to simulate the XRAD-225Cx irradiator, both geometry and kV beam quality (the latter using a phase space file provided for XRAD-225Cx).

RECA (Radiotherapy enhanced with Cherenkov photo-activation) is a proposed treatment where the anti-cancer drug psoralen is photo-activated in situ by UVA (Ultraviolet A, 320-400 nm) Cherenkov light (CL) produced directly by the treatment beam itself. In this study, we develop a UVA-imaging technique to quantify relative UVA CL produced by bulk tissues and other phantoms upon clinical x-ray megavoltage irradiation. UVA CL emission (320-400 nm) was quantified in tissue samples of porcine and poultry and in two kinds of solid waters (SW): brown (Virtual Waters, Standard Imaging, WI) and white (Diagnostic Therapy, CIRS, VA), and in 1% agarose gels variously doped with absorbing dye.

The thickness dependences of acoustic bandgaps were theoretically and experimentally investigated in two-dimensional phononic crystals (PCs) immersed in water. The acoustic pressure transmission coefficients were measured as a function of the PC thickness in order to understand the characteristics of the transmission loss through the PCs. The acoustic bandgaps can be classified into two types of generation mechanisms from the perspective of acoustic diffraction modes: Bragg bandgap and non-zeroth order diffraction (NZOD) bandgap.

Purpose: This work investigates a new approach to enhance radiotherapy through a photo therapeutic agent activated by Cherenkov light produced from the megavoltage photon beam. The process is termed Radiotherapy Enhanced with Cherenkov photo-Activation (RECA). RECA is compatible with various photo-therapeutics, but here we focus on use with psoralen, an ultraviolet activated therapeutic with extensive history of application in superficial and extracorporeal settings.

This study proposes an acoustic theory that describes the resonance phenomena in a resonator made of acoustic composite right/left-handed (CRLH) metamaterials, and verifies it through numerical simulation. The established theory for a microwave CRLH metamaterial resonator is adapted to explain the resonance phenomena in an acoustic CRLH metamaterial resonator. In particular, attention is focused on the zeroth-order resonance phenomenon which has several interesting properties.

Periodic structures are very common in both scientific investigations and engineering applications. The geometry of the periodic structure is important for its designed functionality. Although the techniques such as optical and electron microscopy are capable of measuring the periodicity of microscale periodically-corrugated structures, they cannot be used to measure the height or depth of the corrugation.

The high-volume synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) materials in the form of platelets is desirable for various applications. While water is considered an ideal dispersion medium, due to its abundance and low cost, the hydrophobicity of platelet surfaces has prohibited its widespread use. Here we exfoliate 2D materials directly in pure water without using any chemicals or surfactants.

Although xenon is classically taught to be a "perfusion-limited" gas, (129)Xe in its hyperpolarized (HP) form, when detected by magnetic resonance (MR), can probe diffusion limitation. Inhaled HP (129)Xe diffuses across the pulmonary blood-gas barrier, and, depending on its tissue environment, shifts its resonant frequency relative to the gas-phase reference (0 ppm) by 198 ppm in tissue/plasma barrier and 217 ppm in red blood cells (RBCs). In this work, we hypothesized that in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the ratio of (129)Xe spectroscopic signal in the RBCs vs.

Difference frequency acoustic wave from nonlinear interaction of two primary acoustic waves at frequencies of 76 and 114 kHz was utilized with a parametric acoustic array theory to estimate the nonlinearity parameter of water-saturated sandy sediment. Such nonlinearity parameter can be used as background information for the nonlinear acoustic investigation of bottom or sub-bottom profiling in the ocean sandy sediments. Because of its lower attenuation the difference frequency acoustic wave method can be usefully applied to estimate the nonlinearity parameter of ocean sediment in the ocean as well as under laboratory conditions.

The modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model for acoustic wave propagation in porous media has been found useful to predict wave properties in cancellous bone. The present study is aimed at applying the MBA model to predict the dependence of phase velocity on porosity in cancellous bone. The MBA model predicts a phase velocity that decreases nonlinearly with porosity.

Experimental observations of the subharmonic and ultraharmonic acoustic waves in water-saturated sandy sediment are reported in this paper. Acoustic pressures of both nonlinear acoustic waves strongly depend on the driving acoustic pressure at a transducer. The first ultraharmonic wave reaches a saturation value as the driving acoustic pressure increases.

Biot's theory and the modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model are applied to predict the dependences of acoustic characteristics on frequency and on porosity in cancellous bone. The phase velocities and the attenuation coefficients predicted by both theories are compared with the experimental data of bovine cancellous bone specimens published in the literature. Biot's theory successfully predicts the dependences of the phase velocity on frequency and on porosity in cancellous bone, whereas a significant discrepancy is observed between the predicted and the measured attenuation coefficients.
