Heparanase-1 (HPSE1) is an endo-β-d-glucuronidase that catalyzes degradation of heparan sulfate proteoglycans. Heparanase-1 (HPSE1) is an endo-β-d-glucuronidase that is the only mammalian enzyme known to cleave heparan sulfate (HS) of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG), a key component of the glycocalyx layer of the vascular endothelium matrix. Inhibition of HPSE1 has therapeutic potential for cancer and proteinuric kidney diseases. We previously reported that 2 showed a moderate potency as an HPSE1 inhibitor and an issue of selectivity against exo-β-d-glucuronidase (GUSβ) and glucocerebrosidase (GBA) remained.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is typically characterized by leukocytosis, resulting from the uncontrolled proliferation of malignant cells. However, we report an atypical case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia that presented with leukopenia and exhibited a protracted clinical course spanning 6 months. The patient, a 45-year-old female, initially presented to our hospital with recurrent fever and was found to have lymphoblasts in a hypoplastic bone marrow.

Heparanase-1 (HPSE1) is an endo-β-d-glucuronidase that cleaves heparan sulfate proteoglycans into short-chain heparan sulfates (HS). The inhibition of HPSE1 has therapeutic potential for proteinuric diseases such as nephrotic syndrome because increased HPSE1 expression is associated with the loss of HS in the glomerular basement membrane, leading to the development of proteinuria. The present study examined the generation of a lead compound focusing on chemical structures with a sugar moiety, such as glycosides and sugar analogs, taking their physical properties into consideration.

A 64-year-old male presented with a rapidly growing anterior mediastinal mass during the clinical course of atypical chronic myeloid leukemia. A needle biopsy performed for suspected myeloid sarcoma revealed the presence of Aspergillus abscess. Early diagnosis of mediastinal abscesses, which are associated with a high mortality rate, can prevent the progression of severity.

A 32-year-old woman was diagnosed with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) at 12 weeks of a pregnancy examination and followed up closely without treatment. At 40 weeks of gestation, she underwent emergency caesarean section because of premature rupture. On postoperative day one, the patient exhibited worsening hemolysis and tachycardia and developed high-output heart failure; she was diagnosed with Basedow disease based on the tachycardia pattern and thyroid storm based on the presence of hyperthyroidism, fever, tachycardia, and heart failure.

We herein present a case of pulmonary aluminosis diagnosed with in-air microparticle induced X-ray emission (in-air micro-PIXE) analysis. The diagnosis of pulmonary aluminosis was supported by the occupational exposure to aluminum, ground glass opacity and ill-defined centrilobular nodular opacities seen in high resolution CT, and respiratory bronchioles accompanied by pigmented dust by histological examination by in-air micro-PIXE analysis of the lung tissues. The possibility of developing this rare condition should not be underestimated in workers at high-risk jobs.

Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of the photosynthetic pigment (Mg-)bacteriochlorophyll a and its Zn-substituted form were investigated by steady-state absorption∕fluorescence and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopic measurements. The obtained steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectra of bacteriochlorophyll a in solution showed that the central metal compound significantly affects the energy of the Qx state, but has almost no effect on the Qy state. Photo-induced absorption spectra were recorded upon excitation of Mg- and Zn-bacteriochlorophyll a into either their Qx or Qy state.
