Objective Digital evacuation (DE) is an intervention used to address severe constipation. Literature exists on easily administered laxatives; however, reports on mildly invasive DE usage are limited. This study aimed to elucidate the fundamental data regarding constipation management using a comprehensive national database of DE incidence.

  • Postoperative delirium (POD) is a serious complication mainly affecting older patients, leading to various negative outcomes, and early identification of those at risk is crucial for prevention.
  • A study conducted on 86 patients undergoing major oral and maxillofacial surgery between 2016 and 2023 aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative psychiatric interventions on preventing POD.
  • The results showed that preoperative psychiatric interventions did not significantly reduce the incidence of POD, which was found to be 29.1%, indicating a need for further research on the effectiveness of these interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to enhance the detection of non-polypoid colorectal polyps using artificial intelligence (AI) powered by blue laser imaging (BLI) and linked color imaging (LCI), as previous methods with white light imaging (WLI) showed insufficient results and high false positive rates.
  • Researchers developed three AI models finetuned with specific learning sets (LS) composed of various WLI, BLI, and LCI images, and tested their accuracy against videos containing small lesions.
  • Results indicated that the AI using LCI showed the highest sensitivity (83%) and the lowest false positive rate (6.5%) compared to other AI models and human trainees, demonstrating its effectiveness for detecting

Background And Aim: There are no previous studies in which computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) diagnosed colorectal cancer (CRC) subtypes correctly. In this study, we developed an original CAD for the diagnosis of CRC subtypes.

Methods: Pretraining for the CAD based on ResNet was performed using ImageNet and five open histopathological pretraining image datasets (HiPreD) containing 3 million images.

Objectives: Diagnostic ability of sessile serrated lesions (SSL) and SSL with dysplasia (SSLD) using blue laser/light imaging (BLI) has not been well examined. We analyzed the diagnostic accuracy of BLI for SSL and SSLD using several endoscopic findings compared to those of narrow band imaging (NBI).

Materials And Methods: This was a subgroup analysis of prospective studies.

Patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) show excessive peristalsis, and antispasmodic agents may be useful therapeutic agents. There are few reports on the use of Kampo medicines for the treatment of IBS-D. Shakuyakukanzoto (SKT) is a Kampo medicine that is effective against abdominal pain.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study using mice on a high-fat diet showed that those given Acanthopanax senticosus Harms extract (ASH) had less liver fat, inflammation, and fibrosis after 6 weeks.
  • * The extract activated a key liver transcription factor, HNF4 alpha, leading to increased fat secretion from liver cells, suggesting ASH may be a preventative treatment for fatty liver disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Single-cell RNA sequencing combined with CRISPR allows researchers to understand gene regulation, but single snapshots can miss long-term effects of gene knockouts.
  • RENGE is a new computational method that analyzes time-series data from single-cell CRISPR experiments to model how gene knockouts impact regulatory networks over time.
  • By distinguishing between direct and indirect gene regulations, RENGE provides more accurate insights into gene interactions, which can help identify important factors in biological systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to quantitatively assess muscle stiffness and weakness using shear wave elastography, a non-invasive ultrasound method, focusing on abdominal muscles during anesthetic induction.
  • It involved 75 adult patients, measuring shear wave velocities (SWV) at different states: baseline, opioid-induced rigidity, and after muscle relaxation, adjusting for subcutaneous fat thickness.
  • Results showed a reference SWV of 1.79 m/s, with increases of about 10% and 30% for rest and opioid-induced rigidity, suggesting adjusted SWV could be used for better muscle tone assessment.

Acute leukemia cells require bone marrow microenvironments, known as niches, which provide leukemic cells with niche factors that are essential for leukemic cell survival and/or proliferation. However, it remains unclear how the dynamics of the leukemic cell-niche interaction are regulated. Using a genome-wide CRISPR screen, we discovered that canonical BRG1/BRM-associated factor (cBAF), a variant of the switch/sucrose nonfermenting chromatin remodeling complex, regulates the migratory response of human T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) cells to a niche factor CXCL12.

Article Synopsis
  • Aortic stenosis (AS) can be linked to gastrointestinal bleeding, known as Heyde's syndrome, which is often caused by gastrointestinal angiodysplasias, although its prevalence and characteristics were previously unclear.
  • This study examined patients with severe AS who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) to assess the frequency and endoscopic features of angiodysplasia, particularly focusing on those with moderate to severe anemia.
  • Findings revealed that patients with anemia had a significantly higher rate of angiodysplasia and active bleeding compared to those without anemia, indicating a notable connection between severe AS and digestive tract complications.

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are fibrous nanomaterials produced from plants. Since some nanomaterials are toxic, toxicity evaluation, including examinations using cultured cells, is essential for the effective use of CNFs. On the other hand, microorganisms in the environment can contaminate CNF suspensions.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 can lead to coagulopathy, a condition affecting blood clotting, but the exact mechanisms behind this are still unclear.
  • A study in Japan involving 99 hospitalized COVID-19 patients aimed to investigate the relationship between coagulopathy and extracellular vesicle (EV) levels, focusing on various types of EVs derived from different cell types.
  • The findings revealed that while no significant differences in EV levels were observed between coagulopathy and non-coagulopathy patients, the levels of CD41+ EVs were significantly higher in patients with coagulopathy compared to healthy volunteers, suggesting a potential role for these EVs in the disease's coagulopathy aspect.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compares postoperative pain management between robotic and laparoscopic total hysterectomies, focusing on the use of analgesics like NSAIDs and acetaminophen in patients who had surgery for conditions like uterine fibroids and adenomyosis.
  • - Out of 127 patients, 124 were analyzed, finding that 26.3% of those who had robotic surgery required analgesics post-op, compared to 60.5% from the laparoscopic group, suggesting more pain in the laparoscopic patients initially.
  • - However, while unadjusted analysis showed significant differences, the adjusted analysis did not confirm this, indicating no significant variance in analgesic use between the two methods; the study suggests that further research with

Decidualized ovarian endometrioma is a rare phenomenon that occurs during pregnancy. A 43-year-old pregnant woman with an endometriotic cyst increased owing to desmoplasia presented to us urgently with abdominal pain and was performed a cesarean section at 36 weeks and 1 day of pregnancy. The left ovarian cyst was noted to be partially ruptured, and the pathological diagnosis was an endometriotic cyst with desmoplasia.
