A simple method for determining elemental sulfur in environmental water was developed and applied to seawater samples collected immediately after the occurrence of blue tides in Tokyo Bay. To investigate the concentration and extraction methods, artificial elemental sulfur was quantitatively produced by oxidizing a sulfide solution with an iodine solution, then used as a standard reagent in the experiments. To concentrate the elemental sulfur in the water sample, glass filter paper (GF/F) was used to filter and collect the elemental sulfur.

We have clinically implemented gated stereotactic body radiotherapy under abdominal compression using an Anzai laser-based gating device with visual guidance in combination with an Elekta linear accelerator. To ensure accuracy, we configured the gating window for each patient by correlating the respiratory curve from the laser sensor and the tumor positions from the 4D computed tomography (CT) images reconstructed with the aid of the respiratory curve. This allowed us to define a patient-specific gating window to keep the tumor displacement below 5 mm from the end-expiration, assuming the reproducibility of the tumor trajectories and the laser-based body surface measurements.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in approximately 13% of hospitalized patients and predisposes patients to chronic kidney disease (CKD) through the AKI-to-CKD transition. Studies from our laboratory and others have demonstrated that maladaptive repair of proximal tubule cells (PTCs), including induction of dedifferentiation, G2/M cell cycle arrest, senescence, and profibrotic cytokine secretion, is a key process promoting AKI-to-CKD transition, kidney fibrosis, and CKD progression. The molecular mechanisms governing maladaptive repair and the relative contribution of dedifferentiation, G2/M arrest, and senescence to CKD remain to be resolved.

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is a promising therapeutic approach to food allergy but requires optimization in terms of both efficacy and safety due to the risk of undesired anaphylactic reactions. Here, we investigated the potential of a single DNA plasmid vaccine (Lit-LAMP-DNA-vaccine) encoding multivalent shrimp antigens (Lit v (Litopenaeus vannamei; Whiteleg shrimp) 1, Lit v4, and Lit v3) and a lysosomal-associated membrane protein (LAMP) as the next generation of AIT for patients with allergy. When applied to classification problems, Bayesian networks are often used to infer a class variable when given feature variables. Earlier reports have described that the classification accuracy of Bayesian network structures achieved by maximizing the marginal likelihood (ML) is lower than that achieved by maximizing the conditional log likelihood (CLL) of a class variable given the feature variables. Nevertheless, because ML has asymptotic consistency, the performance of Bayesian network structures achieved by maximizing ML is not necessarily worse than that achieved by maximizing CLL for large data.
