Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 57 patients analyzed, significant clinical differences were observed between the treatment and untreated groups, but both groups had similar baseline demographic and laboratory characteristics.
  • * The results indicated that while early antiviral therapy led to better short-term HBsAg seroclearance rates, it did not prevent chronic hepatitis B or significantly differ in key clinical outcomes, suggesting the need for further, larger randomized studies.

Background And Aim: Tongue base reduction surgery is the only minimally invasive technique that can be performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, especially to treat obstructive sleep apnea caused by hypopharyngeal obstruction. Studies reported that various devices could be used for tongue base reduction, but comparisons of these methods are limited in the literature. Our study aimed to compare the histological effects of tongue base reduction methods performed with the Celon radiofrequency, monopolar cautery, Coblator, and Sutter devices on the tissue.

Background: Deep-lobe tumors have been shown to possess a significantly thicker capsule with less tumor penetration compared to superficial tumors. Thus, more conservative surgical approaches, rather than aggressive methods, have been proposed for treating benign deep-lobe tumors of the parotid gland.

Aim: To evaluate the surgical outcomes and oncological safety of selective deep-lobe parotidectomy (SDLP) in patients with benign lesions located in the deep lobe of the parotid gland.

In this study, organic-inorganic hybrid nanoflower (hNFs) synthesis was realized using 3,4-diaminobenzophenone and Cu(II) metal ions as organic and inorganic ingredients, respectively. The characterization of the synthesized hNFs was carried out using SEM, EDX, FT-IR, XRD, and elemental mapping. The cytotoxic effect of hNFs was investigated against A549 (lung) and MCF-7 (breast) cancer cell lines.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how hemodialysis membranes affect DNA damage and repair in end-stage renal failure patients, focusing on gene expression involved in repairing oxidative damage.
  • The researchers measured the expression of specific repair genes in 20 ESRD patients before and after dialysis and compared it to 20 healthy individuals using real-time PCR methods.
  • Results showed no overall impact of the dialysis process on gene expression, but a significant decrease in PARP1 gene expression in ESRD patients indicates potential impairment in their DNA repair mechanisms, which could influence disease progression.

Introduction: Cognitive impairment is common among patients with hemodialysis. Hemodialysis patients have theoretical risks for both deficiency and accumulation of trace elements. We aimed to investigate the relationship between cognitive dysfunction and whole blood levels of trace elements in hemodialysis patients.

Article Synopsis
  • * About 9.8% of the patients died during hospitalization, with older individuals and those with preexisting kidney issues showing higher mortality rates due to severe injuries and complications.
  • * Key factors influencing mortality included age, injury severity, shock, and certain elevated lab values, highlighting the need for better disaster preparedness and health care improvements for future events.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how childhood adverse experiences (ACEs) affect the risk of postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD) and postpartum depression (PPD) among new mothers.
  • Conducted with 417 mothers in early 2022, the research found that a significant percentage had experienced ACEs, and many exhibited symptoms of trauma and depression linked to their adverse experiences.
  • Results indicated that ACEs increased the likelihood of PPD, especially when combined with traumatic birth experiences, highlighting the need for better screening and support for mothers during and after pregnancy.

Background: Viral and bacterial infections may be complicated by rhabdomyolysis, which has a spectrum of clinical presentations ranging from asymptomatic laboratory abnormalities to life-threatening conditions such as renal failure. Direct viral injury as well as inflammatory responses may cause rhabdomyolysis in the course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). When presented with acute kidney injury (AKI), rhabdomyolysis may be related to higher morbidity and mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • Millions are affected by natural disasters annually, leading to serious medical issues like crush syndrome, which often results in acute kidney injury tied to high mortality rates.
  • This study analyzed data from 1024 patients with crush syndrome after the February 2023 earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, focusing on their treatment and outcomes in Turkish hospitals.
  • The findings revealed high rates of acute kidney injury and hemodialysis treatment, with a 9.8% in-hospital mortality rate, highlighting the urgent need for improved emergency response training and protocols for managing kidney health in disaster scenarios.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared thiol/disulfide balance and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels in 65 patients with Gilbert's syndrome (GS) and 65 healthy individuals to see how they relate to atherosclerosis progression.
  • Results showed that patients with GS had higher total and native thiol levels, lower disulfide levels, and decreased MPO levels compared to healthy controls, suggesting a healthier oxidative balance.
  • The findings indicate that mild hyperbilirubinemia in GS has a protective effect against inflammation and oxidative stress, potentially lowering the risk of atherosclerosis outcomes.

Background/aim: Individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) may experience various speech-related issues, including decreased speech rate, increased pauses, and changes in speech rhythms. The purpose of this study was to compare the volumes of speech-related neuroanatomical structures in MS patients with those in a control group.

Materials And Methods: The research was conducted in the Neurology and Radiology Departments of Malatya Training and Research Hospital.

Background: Coronary collaterals are the feeding bridges between the main epicardial arteries, and research has shown that this collateral development plays a crucial role in myocardial performance, especially in patients with coronary artery disease. However, the evolution of these collaterals has not been fully explained.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to reveal the effect of CD31 on coronary collateral development.

Background: Coronary slow flow (CSF) is a microvascular disease characterized by delayed opacification of the epicardial coronary arteries during angiography. The main pathogenesis of CSF is endothelial dysfunction caused by diffuse atherosclerosis. Dyslipidemia is one of the primary factors raising the risk of atherosclerosis.

Background: Caesarean section is a widely performed surgical procedure that often results in moderate-to-severe postoperative pain. If left untreated, this pain can lead to short-term and long-term consequences. Transversalis fascia plane (TFP) block and transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block are among the regional anaesthesia techniques employed for managing pain after a caesarean section.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on emergency dialysis in individuals aged 65 and older, who are at a higher risk for kidney diseases.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 442 elderly patients, identifying factors like comorbidities, reasons for dialysis, and outcomes.
  • Findings reveal that a significant number had chronic kidney disease, with high mortality rates and specific indicators linked to increased risk, highlighting the need for tailored approaches in treating this population.

Purpose: The primary outcome of this study is to compare the success rates of ONB techniques performed either with ultrasound guidance or with the blind technique. The second outcome is to compare the incidences of perioperative bleeding and the presence of recurrent tumors in the control cystoscopy performed in the 3rd postoperative month in both groups.

Materials And Methods: The study was conducted in the urology operating room of Mugla Sitki Kocman Training and Research Hospital between December 2019 and March 2023.

Background: Undiagnosed underlying medical conditions can cause many patients to be followed, for years, by a diagnosis of a primary psychiatric disorder and to receive inappropriate treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of patients initially diagnosed with a primary psychiatric disorder but whose symptoms were later attributed to medical conditions. These patients' initial and final diagnoses were also examined.
