Ovarian tissue cryopreservation has been widely investigated for preserving female fertility. In the present study, we aimed to compare the effects of three concentrations (1, 1.5, and 3 M) of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on the vitrification of ovarian tissue.

There is a growing regulatory and scientific interest in the studies of environmental substances that are capable of interfering with the reproductive system. Among them, parabens stand out due to their widespread use and frequent detection as contaminants in human tissues and biological fluids. Therefore, we evaluated the toxic effects of butylparaben on the viability and follicular staging of bovine ovarian follicles in vitro.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress in ovaries and corpus luteum (CL) of females and the oxidant effect of CL in ovarian tissues in regions near, intermediate, or distant from it. Ovaries (n=12) of Nelore heifers (n=6) were collected from a slaughterhouse and fragmented. Experiment 1, each ovary was obtained from three fragments, resulting in 18 fragments of ovaries with CL (OV+CL) and another 18 fragments of ovaries without CL (OV-CL).

The goal of this study was to determine the distribution of preantral follicles in bovine ovaries. Follicular distribution in the ovaries ( = 12) was evaluated in the region of the greater curvature of the ovary (GCO) and the region close to the ovarian pedicle (OP) of heifers of the Nelore breed. Two fragments were obtained from each region of the ovary (GCO and OP).

The controversial data about antral follicle count (AFC) may be partially explained by the different criteria used to determine what is high, intermediate and low AFC. This study evaluated different classification methods for AFC groups, relating them to the conception rate, dominant follicle size and body condition score (BCS) in cows submitted to timed artificial insemination (TAI). Nelore cows (; n = 935), received a reproductive program consisting of TAI and natural breeding.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how quercetin affects the growth and health of bovine ovarian fragments, focusing on their morphology and oxidative stress levels using 12 ovaries from Nelore heifers.* -
  • Quercetin was tested at concentrations of 0, 10, 25, and 50 μg/mL over 5 or 10 days, with 25 μg/mL yielding the highest number of healthy and developing follicles along with improved antioxidant effects after 10 days.* -
  • Results showed that while 25 μg/mL quercetin significantly preserved the integrity of developing follicles, there were no notable changes in reactive oxygen species or lipid oxidative degradation compared to non-cultivated controls.*

The aim of this study was to evaluate follicular development, morphological integrity, and antioxidant potential of preantral ovarian follicles from Bos taurus indicus females grown in vitro with alpha-lipoic acid. Ovaries (n = 24) of Bos taurus indicus (n = 12) females were collected during slaughter and fragmented. A randomly obtained fragment from each pair of ovaries was fixed in Bouin (non-cultivated control; D0).

Folliculogenesis is a process of development and maturation of the ovarian follicles, being essential for the maintenance of fertility. In in vivo conditions, 99.9% of the follicles of an ovary do not ovulate and undergo atresia.
