Background: Neural tube defects are congenital malformations of the central nervous system. Genetic predisposition and some environmental factors play an important role in the development of neural tube defects. This study aimed to investigate the effects of diclofenac sodium on the neural tube development in a chick embryo model that corresponds to the first month of vertebral deve- lopment in mammals.

Metabolic syndrome and vaspin in patients with bipolar disorder.

Metabolic disorders and abnormal levels of circulating adipokines have been reported in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in the correlations of vaspin plasma levels and metabolic parameters between two groups: patients with BD and mentally healthy persons. We measured plasma levels of vaspin, metabolic parameters, and metabolic syndrome (MS) in 101 patients with BD and 90 healthy control (HC) subjects.

Acute control of the sleep switch in reveals a role for gap junctions in regulating behavioral responsiveness.

Sleep is a dynamic process in most animals, involving distinct stages that probably perform multiple functions for the brain. Before sleep functions can be initiated, it is likely that behavioral responsiveness to the outside world needs to be reduced, even while the animal is still awake. Recent work in has uncovered a sleep switch in the dorsal fan-shaped body (dFB) of the fly's central brain, but it is not known whether these sleep-promoting neurons also govern the acute need to ignore salient stimuli in the environment during sleep transitions.

To linguistically and culturally adapt the Multiple Sclerosis Work Difficulties Questionnaire-23 (MSWDQ-23) for use in Turkey, and to examine its reliability and validity. Following standard forward-back translation of the MSWDQ-23, it was administered to 124 people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Validity was evaluated using related outcome measures including those related to employment status and expectations, disability level, fatigue, walking, and quality of life.

Label-Free QCM Immunosensor for the Detection of Ochratoxin A.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a potent mycotoxin that poses a risk in food and feed moieties and subject to worldwide regulation. Laboratory-based analytical methods are traditionally employed for reliable OTA quantification, but these methods cannot provide rapid and on-site analysis, where biosensors fill this gap. In this study a label-free quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based immunosensor for the detection of OTA, which is one of the most important small molecule contaminants, was developed by direct immobilization of OTA to amine-bearing sensor surfaces using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC)/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) chemistry.

The effects of gilaburu () juice on experimentally induced Ehrlich ascites tumor in mice.

Objective: The aim of study was to investigate anticancer effect of Viburnum opulus (VO) on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) bearing mice that treated with different concentrations of VO.

Materials And Methods: For tumor transplantation; mice were inoculated with 1 × 10 EAC cells intraperitoneally and than divided into five groups (n = 9). Two hours after inoculation; experimental groups were treated daily with VO extract at doses of 1000 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg, 4000 mg/kg.

Design Strategy for the Molecular Functionalization of Semiconductor Photoelectrodes: A Case Study of p-Si(111) Photocathodes for H Generation.

Functionalization of semiconductor photoelectrodes is actively pursued as an approach to improve the efficiency of photoelectrochemical reactions by modulating the semiconductor's barrier height, but the selection of molecules for functionalization remains largely empirical. We propose a simple but effective design strategy for the organic functionalization of photocathodes for high-efficiency hydrogen generation based on first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The surface dipole of the functionalized photocathode determines its barrier height, which can be optimized to enhance charge separation at the semiconductor-electrolyte interface.

Multiscale Computational Design of Functionalized Photocathodes for H Generation.

We present an integrated computational approach combining first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with wxAMPS, a solid-state drift/diffusion device modeling software, to design functionalized photocathodes for high-efficiency H generation. As a case study, we have analyzed the performance of p-type Si(111) photocathodes functionalized with a set of 20 mixed aryl/methyl monolayers, which have a known synthetic route for attachment to Si(111). DFT is used to screen for high-performing monolayers by calculating the surface dipole induced by the functionalization.

Swallow-induced syncope in 5 patients: Electrophysiologic evaluation during swallowing.

Background: We sought to characterize a cohort of participants with swallow-induced syncope (SIS) with clinical and electrophysiologic evaluations.

Methods: Using electrocardiographic monitoring and neurophysiologic methods of swallowing, we evaluated a cohort of 5 patients with SIS, 4 of whom had longitudinal follow-up.

Results: We determined electrophysiologically that the duration between the onset of swallow and a bradyarrhythmia or asystole is extremely short (2-3 seconds) in SIS.

Feasibility of a 6-Month Yoga Program to Improve the Physical and Psychosocial Status of Persons with Multiple Sclerosis and their Family Members.

Context: To the best of our knowledge, there has been no study on yoga that includes both persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their family members. Because yoga has therapeutic effects in both persons with MS and healthy persons, we hypothesized that it would be an effective method to improve not only the physical and psychosocial status but also the time persons with MS and their family members spend together.

Objective: To examine the feasibility of a 6-month (long-term) yoga program to improve the physical and psychosocial status of persons with MS and their family members.

Extended-release methylphenidate monotherapy in patients with comorbid social anxiety disorder and adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: retrospective case series.

Background: The relationship between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a subject which has recently become a topic of interest for research.

Methods: In this study, 20 patients with comorbid SAD and adult ADHD who were treated with extended-release methylphenidate monotherapy were evaluated retrospectively.

Results: Clinical response for both ADHD and SAD symptoms was observed in 17 of 20 patients.

Yawning is observed in MS and other central nervous system disorders and yawning and swallowing may be controlled by the network of the brain stem. Therefore it is important to investigate the MS patients with various clinical and radiological locations in order to understand the role of brainstem on the yawning mechanisms.

Evaluation of the plasma microRNA levels in stage 3 premature retinopathy with plus disease: preliminary study.

PurposeIn the present study, we aimed to investigate the changes in plasma microRNA (miRNA) levels in premature infants diagnosed with premature retinopathy (ROP).Patients and methodsIn order to investigate the relationship of miRNAs with ROP, 13 premature infants admitted to Mersin University, Medical School, Department of Ophthalmology and diagnosed with ROP stage 3 with plus disease between January 2014-January 2015 were included in the study.
