Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of combining intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation and corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) for treating moderate-to-severe keratoconus in 69 patients.
  • Two groups were compared: one that received both treatments in a single session and another that had ICRS six months after CXL, with evaluations on visual acuity and corneal measurements conducted pre- and post-treatment.
  • Results showed both groups experienced significant improvement in uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, but the single-session group had better outcomes in corneal measurements, with no increase in complications from either treatment approach.

  • Hearing loss impacts communication and quality of life, and the bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) helps by directly stimulating the cochlea through bone conduction.
  • This study compared the effectiveness of two types of BAHA (transcutaneous and percutaneous) in improving hearing performance and subjective auditory abilities among 29 users over 6 months.
  • Results showed both BAHA types led to significant improvements in speech recognition and overall hearing satisfaction without notable differences between them, confirming BAHA's effectiveness in hearing rehabilitation, particularly for those with conductive hearing loss.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric Burkitt lymphoma (pBL) is a fast-growing cancer in children that requires timely diagnosis and treatment, with microRNAs (miRNAs) playing a critical role in understanding the disease's prognosis.
  • The study utilized microRNA sequencing to identify differentially expressed miRNAs in both tumor tissues and plasma from pBL patients, highlighting their potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.
  • The results showed that specific circulating and tissue miRNAs were significantly higher in pBL cases, opening avenues for improved diagnostic methods and survival predictions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of flexible posterior vertebral tethering (PVT) over a minimum of three years in 10 skeletally immature patients with Scheuermann’s kyphosis (SK), questioning its effectiveness as an alternative to spinal fusion.
  • Ten patients aged 11 to 15 were monitored for an average of 47.6 months, with PVT showing significant improvements in thoracic kyphosis and overall spinal alignment while maintaining mobility at the tethered vertebrae.
  • The findings suggest that flexible PVT can gradually correct kyphosis in growing patients, providing successful clinical results and positioning it as a viable option over traditional fusion methods in treating SK.

Our study aimed to assess the influence of incorporating new oral anticoagulant (NOAC) therapy on clinical outcomes among patients who underwent endovascular intervention for below-the-knee (BTK) occlusions necessitating reintervention. The inclusion criteria encompassed patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and had undergone a successful endovascular intervention for BTK artery occlusion, necessitating reintervention. Patients who underwent endovascular interventions for BTK reocclusion were compared to those who received dual-pathway inhibition with NOAC (rivaroxaban 2.

Resin-based three-dimensional (3D) printing finds extensive application in the field of dentistry. Although studies of cytotoxicity, mechanical and physical properties have been conducted for newly released 3D printing resins such as Crowntec (Saremco), Temporary Crown Resin (Formlabs) and Crown & Bridge (Nextdent), the resistance of these materials to esterases in saliva has not been demonstrated at the molecular level. Therefore, in this study, the binding affinities and stability of these new 3D printing resins to the catalytic sites of esterases were investigated using molecular docking and molecular mechanics with Poisson-Bolzmann and surface area solvation (MM/PBSA) methods after active pocket screening.

Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that disrupts cognitive and behavioral functions, and melatonin may help in treating it by promoting the breakdown of harmful beta-amyloid deposits and enhancing Bmal1 gene expression.
  • The study investigates how FDA-approved drugs interact with the CLOCK: Bmal1 dimer and whether combining these medications with melatonin could provide better treatment outcomes for AD.
  • Results indicate that galanthamine and donepezil have similar binding energies to melatonin at the Bmal1 binding site, suggesting a promising new treatment strategy that includes melatonin and the monoclonal antibody Lecanemab, which hasn't been thoroughly examined in previous studies.

Background And Purpose:

Although serum anti-neuronal antibodies are found in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients, it is not completely clear whether they are already present before the cerebrovascular event or emerge thereafter.

.

Methods:

Sera of 21 consecutive first-ever AIS patients were collected within the first day of AIS (baseline), as well as 1 and 6 months after AIS.

Background: The XBB.1.5 sub-variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron now continues to spread rapidly due to the increased transmission rate as a result of increased affinity of the virus binding over the ACE-2 receptor - a gained property due to the mutation that occurred in spike protein.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine treatment response and whether it is associated with antibody titre change in patients with autoimmune nodopathy (AN) previously diagnosed as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), and to compare clinical features and treatment response between AN and CIDP.

Methods: Serum IgG antibodies to neurofascin-155 (NF155), contactin-1 (CNTN1) and contactin-associated protein 1 (CASPR1) were detected with cell-based assays in patients diagnosed with CIDP. Clinical improvement was determined using the modified Rankin scale, need for alternative and/or additional treatments and assessment of the treating neurologist.

Chronobiology, which studies biological rhythms and their impacts on health, presents a potential avenue for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Clock gene-related therapies, focusing on genes responsible for regulating biological rhythms, may hold promise in the treatment. Among these clock genes, nuclear receptor subfamily 1 Group D member 1 (NR1D1) plays a vital role in neurodegenerative diseases.

Purpose: The exact etiology of Bell's palsy (BP) remains unknown, while its potential etiopathology includes neuritis and inflammation-related demyelination as in optic neuritis. It has been reported that disruption of heavy metal homeostasis may be associated with the inflammatory process of optic neuritis; therefore, heavy metals may be involved in the pathogenesis of facial nerve neuritis. In this study, we aimed to investigate serum levels of heavy metals including essential elements [iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), and manganese (Mn)], and nonessential elements [lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd)] in patients with BP.

Introduction Anti-emetic interventions include pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies. Acupressure is a non-pharmacologic and non-invasive therapeutic method that involves applying physical pressure to acupuncture points with fingers or devices. The pericardium (PC6) acupoint is located on the palm side of the wrist between the palmaris longus and flexor carpi radialis tendons, three fingers across the wrist starting at the wrist crease.
