Activation to self-management and exercise in overweight and obese older women with knee osteoarthritis.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) affects approximately 1 in 10 adults in the United States, with higher prevalence in women, aggravated by increased weight. This quasi-experimental pilot study implemented an online self-management (SM) program for older overweight and obese women with knee OA combined with a two-arm progressive exercise trial (walking and stepping groups). After the 10-week intervention using an interprofessional approach, activation to SM scores were significantly higher in all participants (N = 16) and between groups, with a higher increase in the stepping group.

Interprofessional faculty development: integration of oral health into the geriatric diabetes curriculum, from theory to practice.

Background: Health care workforce shortages and an increase demand for health care services by an older demographic challenged by oral-systemic conditions are being recognized across health care systems. Demands are placed on health care professionals to render coordinated delivery of services. Management of oral-systemic conditions requires a trained health care workforce to render interprofessional patient-centered and coordinated delivery of health care services.

Reliability and responsiveness of an 18 site, 10-g monofilament examination for assessment of protective foot sensation.

Purpose: Older persons including those with diabetes are at increased risk for loss of protective sensation in the feet. The 5.07 (10-g) monofilament is recognized as a valid instrument to test for the presence or absence of protective sensation in the foot.

Postural instability in idiopathic Parkinson's disease: discriminating fallers from nonfallers based on standardized clinical measures.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) predisposes one to falls, which in turn may lead to serious injury and decreased quality of life. Therefore, it is critical to accurately identify those at risk of falling so that preventive measures may be properly applied.

Methods: Forty-nine participants (25 retrospectively identified fallers and 24 nonfallers) with a diagnosis of idiopathic PD were included in this study.
