Attached culture allows high biomass productivity and is a promising biomass cultivating system because neither a huge facility area nor a large volume of culture medium are needed. This study investigates photosynthetic and transcriptomic behaviors in cells on a solid surface after their transfer from liquid culture to elucidate the physiological and gene-expression regulatory mechanisms that underlie their vigorous proliferation. The chlorophyll content shows a decrease at 12 h after the transfer; however, it has fully recovered at 24 h, suggesting temporary decreases in the amounts of light harvesting complexes.

A 28-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of chest pain and dyspnea. Chest radiographs showed left pleural effusion. The effused fluid obtained by thoracocentesis was milky, and so chylothorax was diagnosed.

Objective: To evaluate mild Legionella pneumonia (LP) by chest CT, and clinical features.

Patients: In June 2000, an outbreak of LP occurred in Japan. Eight patients with mild LP (seven men, one woman; mean age 55.

A 75-year-old man presented at our hospital for evaluation of a chronic cough and sputa. Radiographic examination showed enlargement of the trachea and main bronchi. On chest radiography, the transverse diameter of the trachea was 39 mm at the level of the third thoracic spine.

The largest epidemic outbreak of legionnaires' disease occurred in Japan, where there were 45 cases, including three deaths. There was a high degree of homology at the genetic level between Legionella pneumophila sero-group 1 isolated from two patients and water samples collected from a public bath, and this highlighted the public bath visited by the patients as the source of the infection. We report our clinical observations of 34 cases with a pneumonia type (20 definite and 14 probable) of the 42 cases for whom a diagnosis was made and follow-up care was subsequently provided at our hospital or hospital-affiliated facilities, out of the initial total of 45 cases.

In this case, a 30-year-old man had been treated for chronic sinusitis and bronchiectasis since 2000, and presented at our outpatient clinic in May 2001 with chief complaints of massive yellow sputum expectoration and dyspnea. After he was admitted by our hospital, Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria were isolated at the rate of 10(8)/ml from his sputum culture. In electron-microscopic observation, the cilia of the bronchial epithelium were found to lack dynein arms.

We encountered a case of pulmonary eosinophilic granuloma complicated with pneumothorax. A 24-year-old man was admitted to our department because of respiratory difficulty. Chest radiography on admission showed a right pneumothorax.

While Nocardial infections are being diagnosed with increasing frequency, infection with Nocardia otitidiscaviarum remains relatively uncommon. We report a case of pulmonary Nocardia otitidis-caviarum infection in a 35-year-old man with Cushing's disease. This work describes the first case of nocardiosis in Japan caused by Nocardia otitidis-caviarum in Cushing's disease.

Sarcoidosis is known to be a disease characterized by high familial aggregations. We reported on the genealogy of sarcoidosis in a man and his identical twin sons. The patient we encountered was a 49-year-old man admitted to our hospital because of abnormal chest X-ray findings observed during a medical checkup.

alpha-1,3-Fucosyltransferase (Fuc T IV) cDNA was placed under the control of beta-actin, cytomegalovirus enhancer/promoter and transfected into embryonic stem cells. The transfected cell clones with integrated cDNA (positive clones) differentiated more efficiently into myocardial cell clones without integrated cDNA (negative clones) or parental cells. Furthermore, myocardial cells differentiated from the positive clones survived longer than those differentiated from the negative clones or parental cells.

cDNA of human alpha-1,3/4-fucosyltransferase (Fuc-TIII) was placed under the control of the chicken beta-actin promoter and cytomegalovirus enhancer, then introduced into male pronuclei of fertilized mouse eggs. A transgenic mouse line thus obtained exhibited enhanced expression of Lex (4C9) antigen in endothelial cells located in the glomerulus, sinusoidal capillaries of the liver and capillaries of the heart. Furthermore, in the transgenic mice, sialyl dimeric Lex (FH6) and sialyl Lea (2D3) antigens were strongly expressed in the glomerular endothelial cells.

cDNAs of alpha-1,3-fucosyltransferase as well as alpha-1,3/4-fucosyltransferase were placed under the control of a beta-actin promoter and cytomegalovirus enhancer and were introduced into L cells. The transfected cells expressing Le(x) antigen showed increased cell substratum adhesion as compared to the antigen-negative cells, when they were cultured for 2 to 4 h in Dulbecco-modified minimum essential medium containing 0.05% bovine serum albumin.
