Dose relationship of limbic-cortical D2-dopamine receptor occupancy with risperidone.

Rationale: It has been suggested that the antipsychotic effect of antipsychotics is mediated by the antagonism of the dopamine D2 receptor in the limbic-cortical regions. Risperidone has an atypical property, but its effect on limbic-cortical regions has not been evaluated.

Objectives: In this study, we examined the relationship among doses of risperidone and limbic-cortical dopamine D2 receptor occupancy using positron emission tomography.

Ten year progressive ventricular enlargement in schizophrenia: an MRI morphometrical study.

Recent studies of the brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have suggested progressive structural changes in schizophrenics. However, those studies were conducted over periods of less than 5 years and thus lacked sufficient capacity to determine the course and nature of this process. In this study, MRI scans were obtained in 15 schizophrenics and 12 controls at baseline and after 4- and 10-year follow ups.

The etiopathogenesis of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) remains speculative. Epithelioid granulomas are often found in the vicinity of damaged interlobular bile ducts in PBC, raising the possibility of a reaction to microbial materials. In this study, we tried to detect and identify bacterial DNA within granulomatous lesions in PBC.

Surgical repair of acute left ventricular free wall rupture: report of a case.

We present a case of acute (blowout) left ventricular free wall rupture (LVFWR) that occurred on the third day after inferior myocardial infarction. Because electromechanical dissociation developed abruptly and pericardiocentesis was no effective, there was no time for establishing a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Emergency thoracotomy and direct closure were successfully performed at the bed-side.

Background: Neuroimaging studies have suggested the possible role of the cerebellum in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. However, no study has investigated the detailed structures of the cerebellum in patients without a history of neuroleptic medication. The objective of this study is to examine the volume of detailed structures of the cerebellum in neuroleptic-naive schizophrenic patients and to examine the relationship between cerebellar morphology and clinical symptoms.

Here, we have studied the effect of pulsatile perfusion on the rate of cerebral complication due to a cerebrovascular lesion in patients undergoing coronary arterial bypass graft under cardiopulmonary bypass.

The effect of carbon dioxide tension on cerebral circulation during hypothermic selective cerebral perfusion.

Background: Some reports have observed the response of cerebral blood flow to PaCO2 during hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. We studied the effect of PaCO2 on the cerebral circulation during hypothermic selective cerebral perfusion.

Methods: Between June 1992 and January 1998, 35 patients underwent aortic arch grafting using hypothermic selective cerebral perfusion (20 degrees C).

Serotonin 5-HT2 receptors in schizophrenic patients studied by positron emission tomography.

Using positron emission tomography (PET) and [11C]N-methylspiperone (NMSP), we examined 5-HT2 receptors in the cortex of schizophrenic patients in whom we previously observed decreased prefrontal D1 receptor binding. The subjects were 10 neuroleptic-naive schizophrenic patients, 7 schizophrenic patients who were drug-free but had previously been treated with neuroleptics, and 12 normal controls. A non-significant trend towards decreased prefrontal [11C]NMSP binding was observed in the neuroleptic-treated patients, suggesting a possible effect of previous neuroleptic treatment on the alteration in cortical 5-HT2 function.

We report a positron emission tomography study on reading of Japanese Kanji (morphograms) words, Kana (phonograms) words and Kana nonwords using statistical parametric mapping. Activity was more pronounced in the lateral fusiform gyrus (Area 37) in Kanji, in contrast to the greater activation in the middle and inferior occipital gyri (Areas 18 and 19) and the deep perisylvian temporo-parietal area (Areas 40/22 and 22/21) in Kana, suggesting that Kanji and Kana are processed differently.

The characteristic serological feature of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is the presence of antimitochondrial antibodies (AMAs), and the major proteins recognized by AMAs are subunits of the 2-oxo acid dehydrogenase complexes (2-OADC), including the E2 components of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC), the 2-oxo-glutarate dehydrogenase complex (OGDC), the branched-chain 2-oxoacid dehydrogenase complex (BCOADC), the E3 binding protein (E3BP or protein X) and the E1a component of mammalian PDC. Previous work has postulated that either E3BP, or a molecule cross-reactive with the PDC-E2 molecule, is uniquely expressed on the surface of biliary epithelial cells in PBC. To address this issue, we performed in situ hybridization for all of the major 2-OADC components at the mRNA level, including PDC-E2, BCOADC-E2, OGDC-E2, PDC-E1a, BCOADC-E1a, OGDC-E1, and E3BP using 13 PBC and 9 control livers using 7 mitochondrial antisense probes.

[Discrimination of leukoencephalopathy from leukemic cell invasion by MR spectroscopy in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia].

A 58-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in November 1992 because of fever and arthralgia. He was given a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and treated with an Ad-VP regimen, which resulted in complete remission. After two courses of consolidation therapy and intrathecal (IT) injections of methotrexate, Ara-C, and prednisolone the patient received high-dose Ara-C plus VP-16 followed by recombinant human G-CSF for the collection of peripheral blood stem cells.

B-cell lymphoma associated with haemophagocytic syndrome: a clinical, immunological and cytogenetic study.

B-cell lymphoma associated with haemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is extremely rare in Western countries but has recently been increasingly reported in Asian countries. We describe seven patients with B-cell lymphoma associated with HPS, six males and one female, age range 41-82 years (median 63 years). All patients had fever and splenomegaly, and six of the seven patients had hepatomegaly with no associated lymphadenopathy.

Muscarinic receptor occupancy by biperiden in living human brain.

Anticholinergic drug is often used to treat extrapyramidal symptoms. We measured muscarinic cholinergic receptor (mAchR) occupancy by the oral administration of biperiden in eight healthy subjects using positron emission tomography (PET) and [11C]N-methyl-4-piperidylbenzilate (NMPB). After the baseline scan each subject underwent one or two post-dose PET scans.

Human cerebral acetylcholinesterase activity measured with positron emission tomography: procedure, normal values and effect of age.

The regional cerebral metabolic rate of [11C]N-methyl-4-piperidyl acetate, which is nearly proportional to regional cerebral acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, was measured by dynamic positron emission tomography in 20 healthy subjects with a wide age range (24-89 years). Quantitative measurement was achieved using a kinetic model which consisted of arterial plasma and cerebral tissue compartments. Synthesis and effects of novel thiazole derivatives against thrombocytopenia.

5-(2-Pyridylsulfonyl)-2-thiazolamine (2) was effective both in mitomycin C (MMC)-induced thrombocytopenia and in an animal model of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). It also suppressed the increase of autoantibodies against platelets in the ITP model and showed no blood toxicity. Chemical modification of 2 led to the discovery of more potent compounds against MMC-induced thrombocytopenia.
