Trade involving elasmobranch products in Bangladesh is a four-decade-long practice in large scale and there is little understanding of its impact on species composition, population, and subsequent conservation. Capacity for monitoring and identification is lacking in landing and shark processing centres. A rapid survey and collection of tissue samples were performed in three landings and nine shark processing centres between 2016 and 2017 in the south-eastern coastal region of Bangladesh.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed allele frequencies and haplotype diversity of 17 Y-chromosomal STR loci in 120 Garo and 139 Santal males in Bangladesh, resulting in 99 haplotypes for Garo and 129 for Santal.
  • Discrimination capacities (DC) were found to be 0.825 for Garo and 0.928 for Santal, indicating how effectively these haplotypes can distinguish between individuals.
  • Genetic comparisons showed the Garo population is closely related to the Tripuri population in India, while the Santal population has a moderate relationship with the Munda population; both groups are significantly genetically distant from the mainstream Bengali population.
