Understanding exotic forms of magnetism in quantum spin systems is an emergent topic of modern condensed matter physics. Quantum dynamics can be described by particle-like carriers of information, known-as quasiparticles that appear from the collective behaviour of the underlying system. Spinon excitations, governing the excitations of quantum spin-systems, have been accurately calculated and precisely verified experimentally for the antiferromagnetic chain model.

Haldane and dimer phases in a frustrated spin chain: an exact groundstate and associated topological phase transition.

A Heisenberg spin-chain with alternating ferromagnetic (FM) (-J1F<0) and antiferromagnetic (J1A>0) nearest-neighbor (NN) interactions, exhibits the dimer and spin-2Haldane phases in the limitsJ1F/J1A→0andJ1F/J1A→∞respectively. These two phases are understood to be topologically equivalent. Induction of the frustration through the next NN FM interaction (-J2F<0) produces a very rich quantum phase diagram.

Possible Link Between Stress-related Factors and Altered Body Composition in Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Background: Stress is an invisible factor affecting modern day living and is strongly associated with many disease pathogenesis including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women. PCOS is the most frequent endocrinological disorder that affects women of reproductive age, leading to metabolic dysfunction and body composition alterations. Salivary amylase and cortisol are major stress mediators that have been implicated in PCOS.

Time trends in ectopic pregnancy over a decade--a retrospective hospital-based study.

A 10-year study to evaluate the time trends of ectopic pregnancy showed a gradual but steady rise of incidence from 1/179 to 1/108. Reproductive failure constituted the major bulk but contraceptive failure is gradually increasing. Interestingly failure of emergency contraception has emerged as another risk factor in recent years.

Contraceptive practice of the tribal women in tea garden area of North Bengal.

A total of 860 tribal tea garden women in the Jalpaiguri district were surveyed by means of detailed questionnaires to obtain information of their contraceptive knowledge and practices and also to see the literacy rate among themselves. Analysis was done of their literacy level, family planning awareness, access to information and communication, methods of contraception adopted and utilisation of healthcare facilities. Majority (85%) of the tea garden women including all the age groups were illiterate.
