Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is well accepted as a safe, reliable, minimal invasive and cost-effective method for diagnosis of salivary gland lesions. This study evaluated the accuracy and diagnostic performance of FNA cytology in Thailand. A consecutive series of 290 samples from 246 patients during January 2001-December 2009 were evaluated from the archive of the Anatomical Pathology Department of our institution and 133 specimens were verified by histopathologic diagnoses, obtained with material from surgical excision or biopsy.

To assess the diagnostic performances of LiquiPrep® (LP) to detect cervical cellular abnormality in comparison to Papanicolaou (Pap) smear in 194 women with abnormal cervical cytology who were scheduled for colposcopy at the institution between January 2008 and November 2008. The women were randomized to undergo a repeated cervical cytologic evaluation by Pap smear followed by LP, or the two methods in alternating order. The pathologist was blinded to previous cytologic diagnosis and the pair of slides assigned for each woman.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy and diagnostic performance of fine needle aspiration FNA cytology in diagnoses of breast masses.

Methods: Women who had FNA diagnoses for breast masses and underwent subsequent histopathologic evaluation during January 2003-December 2006 were accessed from the archive of the Anatomical Pathology Department of our institution. Cytologic diagnoses were classified as unsatisfactory, benign, atypical probably benign, suspicious probably malignant, and malignant, and were compared to the histopathologic diagnoses obtained from core needle biopsy, excisional biopsy, or mastectomy to give an assessment of the diagnostic performance of FNA.

Objective: To use electron microscopy to examine the role of parasitized red blood cell (PRBC) sequestration in the pathogenesis of acute renal failure in severe falciparum malaria.

Methods: Ultrastructural pathological examination of renal tissues from Southeast Asian adults (n = 63) who died from severe falciparum malaria. Qualitative and quantitative determination of the major pathological features of disease, including PRBC and leukocyte sequestration.

Effects of elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum) volatile oil (GVO) and trichothecene (T-2) toxin were studied in Swiss albino mice. The animals were 1) topically applied GVO, 2) topically applied T-2 toxin, 3) topically applied GVO followed by T-2 toxin (GVO/T-2), and 4) T-2 toxin application followed by GVO (T-2/GVO) on the right footpad. All animals were observed by Langerhans cell enumeration and pathological changes of the footpad on days 1, 3, 5 and 7.
