Background: Rehabilitation therapists are sometimes unaware of the possibility of undiagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF) and the importance of AF detection. Thus, we aimed to increase awareness among rehabilitation therapists of the importance of AF detection at rehabilitation hospitals during regular pulse checks of patients with ischemic stroke.

Methods: In this multicenter prospective observational study, we enrolled patients with noncardiac stroke.

A Predictive Model for Oral Intake Independence in Dysphagia Treatment.

Objective: One concern for patients suffering from dysphagia is whether their swallowing improves enough to allow oral intake. Predicting oral intake independence would be practical for deciding the treatment strategy, such as swallowing improvement surgeries, at an early stage. This study describes the prognostic factors and predictive method for achieving oral intake independence at discharge from acute care hospitals.

Estimated protein intake and prognosis in hospitalised heart failure: A focus on patients with and without chronic kidney disease.

Background And Aims: In patients with heart failure (HF), differences in the association between estimated protein intake (PI) and prognosis in those with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain to be clarified. This study aimed to investigate whether the prognostic effects of the estimated PI differ between patients with HF with and without CKD.

Methods: We included patients who required hospitalisation owing to worsening HF between 2015 and 2019 and assessed the estimated PI based on the adjusted Maroni formula using the body mass index and urinary urea nitrogen level.

Hidden MODY in Young Lean Women with Mild Glucose Intolerance Detected During Health Check-ups: Potential for Improved Pregnancy Outcomes Through Preconception Care.

Mild glucose intolerance (positive urine glucose or mild hyperglycemia) during health checkups in young, lean women may require specialist consultation. We herein report a 31-year-old Japanese woman with mild hyperglycemia detected during a checkup who was diagnosed with overt diabetes in pregnancy and HNF4A-MODY postpartum, without prior follow-up. This case highlights the following: MODY may be present in young, lean women with mild glucose intolerance, and preconception care may improve pregnancy outcomes.

This study investigates how the cavity depth of restorations influences the color adjustment potential of universal shade bulk-fill resin composites. Standard cavities, with diameters of 4 mm and depths of either 2 or 4 mm, were created at the center of artificial teeth occlusal surfaces. A structural-colored bulk-fill resin composite and two pigment-incorporated universal shade bulk-fill resin composites were used.

Help-seeking behavior of male victims of intimate partner violence in Japan.

Aim: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is becoming a serious public health issue worldwide. This study sought to analyze factors affecting the help-seeking behavior of male victims of IPV using a web survey.

Methods: Male IPV victims living in Japan were recruited to participate in a web-based questionnaire survey conducted on February 25 and 26, 2021.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a common comorbidity in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Patients undergoing pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for AF have a high prevalence of SDB. In previous studies, some patients with AF had Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR).

Influence of luting strategies on dentin bond performance of self-adhesive resin luting cement in combination with a universal adhesive.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the dentin bond performance of various resin luting cement (RLC) systems combined with universal adhesives in different luting strategies.

Materials And Methods: Three self-adhesive resin luting cements (SRLCs) were used with universal adhesives as primers. Twelve specimens per group were prepared to measure shear bond strength (SBS) under distinct luting strategies in etch-&-rinse and self-etch modes.

Association between Mobility of Residual Left Atrial Thrombus and Stroke Severity in Patients with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation.

Background: The differences in the characteristics of ischemic stroke associated with a mobile versus nonmobile residual left atrial thrombus (LAT) are unclear. We investigated whether the mobility of an LAT detected by transthoracic echocardiography is associated with the clinical features of stroke.

Methods: This study included 20 consecutive patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation who were admitted to our hospital for treatment of acute ischemic stroke and then found to have an LAT on transthoracic echocardiography.

Safety of Antithrombotic Therapy within 24 Hours after Recombinant Tissue-Plasminogen Activator Treatment for Large-Artery Atherosclerosis Stroke: Insights from Emergent PTA/CAS Cases.

Background: Antithrombotic therapy (AT) should generally be avoided within 24 hours after recombinant tissue-plasminogen activator (rt-PA) treatment but should be considered in patients with large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) who undergo concomitant emergent endovascular treatment (EVT). The aim of the present study was to assess the safety of AT within 24 hours after rt-PA treatment in patients with hyperacute ischemic stroke due to LAA who received concomitant EVT.

Methods: From January 2013 through July 2019, consecutive patients with acute ischemic cerebrovascular disease due to LAA who were admitted within 6 hours from symptom onset were recruited.

We aimed to compare the outcomes of pediatric kidney transplantation (KT) between preemptive KT (PEKT) and non-PEKT in children aged < 6 years. Seventy-four pediatric recipients aged < 6 years who underwent KT were divided into the PEKT and non-PEKT groups. They were retrospectively evaluated for patient and graft survival, graft function, growth, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection.

Cardioembolic stroke accounts for over 20% of ischemic strokes and is associated with worse outcomes than other types of strokes. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common risk factor for cardioembolic stroke. In this narrative review, we present an update about cardioembolic stroke mainly related to AF and atrial cardiopathy.

Repeated Ischemic Stroke due to in situ Thrombus at the Middle Cerebral Artery in a Patient with Essential Thrombocythemia.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that is a rare cause of ischemic stroke. We herein report a 70-year-old man with JAK2 V617F mutation-positive ET who experienced ischemic stroke twice in 1 month due to transient stenosis. In both events, transient stenosis formed at the same curvature of the right middle cerebral artery, and the thrombus disappeared with the initiation of antiplatelet agents.

Multiple Cerebral Infarcts Due to Severe Anemia Preceded by Migraine-like Headache with Aura.

We herein report a 47-year-old woman who developed migraine-like headache with aura and subsequent multiple cerebral infarcts, likely due to severe iron deficiency anemia (IDA) from menorrhagia. The progression from IDA to ischemic stroke involves several pathophysiological mechanisms, including reduction of erythrocyte deformability, reactive thrombocytosis, and anemic hypoxia. We speculate that a microembolus first caused cortical spreading depression without infarcts and that a larger thromboembolus then caused multiple infarcts.

Assessment of drainage vein of focal nodular hyperplasia using contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

Purpose: Identification of drainage vessels is useful for differential diagnosis of hepatic tumors. Direct drainage to the hepatic vein has been reported to occur in focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH), but studies evaluating the drainage veins of FNH are limited. We aimed to investigate the detection rate of the FNH drainage vein and the factors related to visualization of the drainage vein on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS).
