In 2020, 20% of patients with COVID-19 developed severe complications, including life-threatening pneumonia with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). We developed a preliminary SIRS monitor that does not require blood sampling, is noninvasive, and can collect data 24 h per day. The proposed monitor comprises a piezoelectric respiratory sensor located beneath the patient's mattress and a fingertip pulse sensor that determines ultra-high accuracy respiratory rate (mode of a 40-min frequency distribution of respiratory rates (M40FD-RR)).

Understanding the growth and evolution of social networks is an important area of study, as these networks form the foundation for many popular online services such as social networking sites (SNS) and online games. However, previous models developed to explain the growth mechanisms of these networks have struggled to accurately reproduce certain behaviors that are frequently observed in real data, such as waves of novelty, in which new individuals or topics receive more attention than existing ones for a short period of time. The effect of temperature on photoluminescence (PL) due to theP→S(= 5/2, 7/2) transitions of Gdions was examined between 200 and 500 K for a sol-gel-derived silica-(Gd,Pr)POtransparent glass-ceramic phosphor with negligible concentration quenching under excitation into the 5d-4f transition of Prions at 220 nm. The intensity of the narrow-band ultraviolet B (UVB) PL at ∼313 nm associated with theP→Stransition slightly increased between 200 and 300 K, but was decreased to ∼86% and ∼62% of that at 300 K when temperature was raised to 400 and 500 K, respectively. The observed magnitude of the thermal quenching of the UVB PL intensity was agreed well with that recorded in a prototype narrow-band UVB lamp consisting of another silica-(Gd,Pr)POtransparent glass-ceramic window and a KrCl excimer lamp as a light source at 222 nm.

Aging is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and accumulating evidence indicates that biological aging has a significant effect on the onset and progression of CVDs. In recent years, therapies targeting senescent cells (senotherapies), particularly senolytics that selectively eliminate senescent cells, have been developed and show promise for treating geriatric syndromes and age-associated diseases, including CVDs. In 2 pilot studies published in 2019 the senolytic combination, dasatinib plus quercetin, improved physical function in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and eliminated senescent cells from adipose tissue in patients with diabetic kidney disease.
