In environments where glucose is limited, some pathogenic bacteria metabolize host-derived sialic acid as a nutrient source. -Acetylmannosamine kinase (NanK) is the second enzyme of the bacterial sialic acid import and degradation pathway and adds phosphate to -acetylmannosamine using ATP to prime the molecule for future pathway reactions. Sequence alignments reveal that Gram-positive NanK enzymes belong to the Repressor, ORF, Kinase (ROK) family, but many lack the canonical Zn-binding motif expected for this function, and the sugar-binding EGH motif is altered to EGY.

A dielectric and spectrophotometric study of the tautomerization of 2-hydroxypyridine and 2-mercaptopyridine in water.

The basic ionization (p ) and acidic ionization (p ) constants and equilibrium constant ( ) of 2HPy and 2MPy were determined. The p (s) of their - and -methyl derivatives (X = O, S) were also determined. The equilibrium constant of 2MPy is approximately 60 times greater than its oxygen analog, 2HPy.

Time-Resolved sub-Ångström Metrology by Temporal Phase Interferometry near X-Ray Resonances of Nuclei.

We introduce an analytical phase-reconstruction principle that retrieves atomic scale motion via time-domain interferometry. The approach is based on a resonant interaction with high-frequency light and does not require temporal resolution on the time scale of the resonance period. It is thus applicable to hard x rays and γ rays for measurements of extremely small spatial displacements or relative-frequency changes.

Extracorporeal liver support in patients with liver failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials.

Purpose: Acute liver failure (ALF) and acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF) are associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Extracorporeal liver support (ECLS) devices have been used as a bridge to liver transplant; however, the efficacy and safety of ECLS are unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to examine the efficacy and safety of ECLS in liver failure.

Perioperative anesthetic management of a combined right atrial thrombectomy with living donor liver transplantation.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with vascular invasion is usually considered inoperable. We describe a case of HCC with vascular invasion and right atrial thrombus that was successfully down staged. Patient underwent combined right atrial thrombectomy and living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in the same setting.

Serotonin is essential for eye regeneration in planaria Schmidtea mediterranea.

Planaria is an ideal system to study factors involved in regeneration and tissue homeostasis. Little is known about the role of metabolites and small molecules in stem cell maintenance and lineage specification in planarians. Using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based quantitative metabolomics, we determined the relative levels of metabolites in stem cells, progenitors, and differentiated cells of the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea.

Meeting report - Mitotic spindle: from living and synthetic systems to theory.

Leading scientists from the field of mitotic spindle research gathered from 24-27 March 2019 to participate in the first 'Mitotic spindle: From living and synthetic systems to theory' conference. This meeting was held in Split, Croatia, organized by Nenad Pavin (Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb) and Iva Tolić (Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb). Around 75 participants presented the latest advances in mitotic spindle research, ranging from live-cell imaging, reconstitution experiments and theoretical models of spindle assembly.

Impact of physicochemical properties on duration and head rice yield during abrasive and friction milling of rice.

The physicochemical properties of four rice varieties representing high amylose (Jyothi and IR64), intermediate amylose (Taraori Basmati) and waxy (Agonibora) were evaluated to understand their influence on milling. Based on the grain dimensions, Jyothi and Agonibora were classified as long and medium, IR64 as long and slender, and Basmati as extra-long and slender. The head rice yield (HRY) was higher with abrasive milling (61-75%) compared to friction milling (10-60%) although it required longer milling duration.

Demonstration of a Low-Cost Multi-Pollutant Network to Quantify Intra-Urban Spatial Variations in Air Pollutant Source Impacts and to Evaluate Environmental Justice.

Air quality monitoring has traditionally been conducted using sparsely distributed, expensive reference monitors. To understand variations in PM on a finely resolved spatiotemporal scale a dense network of over 40 low-cost monitors was deployed throughout and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Monitor locations covered a wide range of site types with varying traffic and restaurant density, varying influences from local sources, and varying socioeconomic (environmental justice, EJ) characteristics.

Structural and functional characterization of CMP-N-acetylneuraminate synthetase from Vibrio cholerae.

Several pathogenic bacteria utilize sialic acid, including host-derived N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), in at least two ways: they use it as a nutrient source and as a host-evasion strategy by coating themselves with Neu5Ac. Given the significant role of sialic acid in pathogenesis and host-gut colonization by various pathogenic bacteria, including Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae, Pasteurella multocida and Vibrio cholerae, several enzymes of the sialic acid catabolic, biosynthetic and incorporation pathways are considered to be potential drug targets. In this work, findings on the structural and functional characterization of CMP-N-acetylneuraminate synthetase (CMAS), a key enzyme in the incorporation pathway, from Vibrio cholerae are reported.

Nosocomial Infections Are Frequent and Negatively Impact Outcomes in Hospitalized Patients With Cirrhosis.

Objectives: Nosocomial infections (NIs) can be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in cirrhosis. This study aims to define the determinants of NI development and its impact on 30-day outcomes among hospitalized patients with cirrhosis.

Methods: North American Consortium for the Study of End-Stage Liver Disease enrolled patients with cirrhosis who were admitted nonelectively.

Dosimetric analysis and clinical outcomes of brachial plexus as an organ-at-risk in head-and-neck cancer patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy.

Objectives: To document the dose received by brachial plexus (BP) in patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and report the incidence of brachial plexopathy.

Methods: Newly diagnosed patients of HNSCC treated with radical or adjuvant IMRT were included in this retrospective study. No dosimetric constraints were applied for BP maximum dose equivalent dose (EQD2 α/β = 3).

Locally advanced high-risk HPV related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC); have we forgotten it is a different disease?

HPV related OPSCC has a distinct behavior and improved outcome. As immunotherapy has recently evolved into a new standard for advanced (SCCHN), trials for high-risk SCCHN have trended to encompass both HPV related and unrelated diseases. In this invited editorial, we question the wisdom of this approach and argue for the design of trials focused specifically on HPV related locally advanced oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma as a unique disease entity.

The Functional and Molecular Effects of Doxycycline Treatment on Phenotype.

Recent studies have shown that can form antibiotic-tolerant persisters in the presence of microbiostatic drugs such as doxycycline. Precisely how this occurs is yet unknown. Our goal was to examine gene transcription by following doxycycline treatment in an effort to identify both persister-associated genes and possible targets for antimicrobial intervention.

Targets to improve quality of care for patients with hepatic encephalopathy: data from a multi-centre cohort.

Background: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) can adversely affect outcomes in both in-patients and out-patients with cirrhosis.

Aim: To define targets for improving quality of care in HE management in the multi-centre North American Consortium for End-Stage Liver Disease (NACSELD) cohort.

Method: NACSELD in-patient cohort was analysed for (a) medication-associated precipitants, (b) aspiration pneumonia development, (c) HE medication changes, and (d) 90-day HE recurrence/readmissions.

The correct localization of Hedgehog effectors to the tip of primary cilia is critical for proper signal transduction. The conserved non-motile kinesin Kif7 defines a "cilium-tip compartment" by localizing to the distal ends of axonemal microtubules. How Kif7 recognizes microtubule ends remains unknown.

Preparation, characterization and functional properties of seed protein isolate.

Moringa seed protein isolate (MPI) was prepared by aqueous salt extraction followed by watering-out to precipitate proteins. Extraction and precipitation steps were optimized to achieve maximum MPI yield. Besides, MPI was characterized based on its composition and functional properties.

Influence of disease duration and socioeconomic factors on the prevalence of infection and hospitalization in rheumatoid arthritis: KRAC study.

Aim: The use of healthcare resources by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients can be related to the presence of disease, comorbid conditions, use of steroids, and the combined use of immunosuppressants. This study evaluated the risk factors associated with infection and hospitalization in RA.

Methods: This multicenter, cross-sectional study enrolled 3247 RA subjects fulfilling the 2010 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism criteria to examine the prevalence of hospitalization and episodes of documentable non-tubercular infections as a part of the "Karnataka rheumatoid arthritis comorbidity" study (KRAC).

Age-specific differences in the dynamics of protective immunity to influenza.

Influenza A viruses evolve rapidly to escape host immunity, causing reinfection. The form and duration of protection after each influenza virus infection are poorly understood. We quantify the dynamics of protective immunity by fitting individual-level mechanistic models to longitudinal serology from children and adults.

Information-Theoretic Inference of an Optimal Dictionary of Protein Supersecondary Structures.

We recently developed an unsupervised Bayesian inference methodology to automatically infer a dictionary of protein supersecondary structures (Subramanian et al., IEEE data compression conference proceedings (DCC), 340-349, 2017). Specifically, this methodology uses the information-theoretic framework of minimum message length (MML) criterion for hypothesis selection (Wallace, Statistical and inductive inference by minimum message length, Springer Science & Business Media, New York, 2005).
