A new species of Cyclogomphus Selys, 1854 is described from the Western Ghats of India based on male and female specimens collected from Goa and Kerala states. To understand the impact of epigenetics on human misfolding disease, we apply Gaussian-process regression (GPR) based machine learning (ML) (GPR-ML) through variation spatial profiling (VSP). VSP generates population-based matrices describing the spatial covariance (SCV) relationships that link genetic diversity to fitness of the individual in response to histone deacetylases inhibitors (HDACi). Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1) is a Mendelian disorder caused by >300 variants in the NPC1 gene that disrupt cholesterol homeostasis leading to the rapid onset and progression of neurodegenerative disease.

A 72-year-old man with a past medical history notable for deceased renal transplant presented to the interventional radiology department for routine right lower quadrant renal transplant nephroureteral catheter exchange. The nephroureteral catheter was placed in 2016 because of the presence of a hematoma causing partial page kidney and hydronephrosis. An antegrade nephrostogram was notable for opacification of the small bowel instead of the renal collecting system.

Studies have demonstrated that intensive ART alone is not capable of eradicating HIV-1, as the virus rebounds within a few weeks upon treatment interruption. Viral rebound may be induced from several cellular subsets; however, the majority of proviral DNA has been found in antigen experienced resting CD4+ T cells. To achieve a cure for HIV-1, eradication strategies depend upon both understanding mechanisms that drive HIV-1 persistence as well as sensitive assays to measure the frequency of infected cells after therapeutic interventions.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is a human respiratory tract pathogen and a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Although the pneumococcus is a commensal bacterium that colonizes the nasopharynx, it also causes lethal diseases such as meningitis, sepsis, and pneumonia, especially in immunocompromised patients, in the elderly, and in young children. Due to the acquisition of antibiotic resistance and the emergence of nonvaccine serotypes, the pneumococcus has been classified as one of the priority pathogens for which new antibacterials are urgently required by the World Health Organization, 2017.

The cupin-type phosphoglucose isomerase (PfPGI) from the hyperthermophilic archaeon catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate. We investigated PfPGI using protein-engineering bioinformatics tools to select functionally-important residues based on correlated mutation analyses. A pair of amino acids in the periphery of PfPGI was found to be the dominant co-evolving mutation.

Niemann-Pick type C1 (NPC1) disease is a fatal neurovisceral disease for which there are no FDA approved treatments, though cyclodextrin (HPβCD) slows disease progression in preclinical models and in an early phase clinical trial. Our goal was to evaluate the mechanism of action of a previously described combination-therapy, Triple Combination Formulation (TCF) - comprised of the histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) vorinostat/HPβCD/PEG - shown to prolong survival in Npc1 mice. Patients with cirrhosis of the liver have high mortality after surgery. We investigated the mortality in patients with cirrhosis of the liver who underwent surgery other than liver transplant and applied the Mayo clinic model to predict mortality and compare with the observed mortality. We also studied the association of the observed mortality with the Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class and the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) and model for end-stage liver disease-sodium (MELD-Na) scores.

Most cancer cells are dependent on a network of deregulated signaling pathways for survival and are insensitive, or rapidly evolve resistance, to selective inhibitors aimed at a single target. For these reasons, drugs that target more than one protein (polypharmacology) can be clinically advantageous.
