Article Synopsis
  • - Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disorder, and understanding factors for biochemical remission (which ranges from 40% to 85%) is important for personalized treatment, especially after transsphenoidal surgery (TSS).
  • - In a study of 61 acromegaly patients, the average age at diagnosis was 38, with a majority being female; the biochemical remission rate after 3 months post-TSS was 34.4%, despite significant tumor characteristics.
  • - The findings highlighted that larger tumors, higher hormone levels, and advanced Knosp grades were associated with lower remission rates, while traditional immunohistochemical markers did not effectively predict outcomes.

Cushing's disease (CD) is characterized by a high rate of hypogonadism and infertility. It is difficult to detect CD in pregnant women who present with symptoms such as weight gain, striae, headache, backache, and pedal edema that overlap with the physiological changes of pregnancy. In this paper, we present three cases of CD likely missed during pregnancy and later also discuss the approach to diagnosis and management of CD in pregnancy.

Residual bladder volume measurement is a very important marker for patients with urinary retention problems. To be able to monitor patients with these conditions at the bedside by nurses or in an out patient setting by general physicians, hand held ultrasound devices will be extremely useful. However to increase the usage of these devices by non traditional users, automated tools that can aid them in the scanning and measurement process will be of great help.

Although the concept of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has remained unchanged, component technology has evolved considerably over the past three decades. Presently the clinical conditions requiring ECMO support have been updated with input from the outcome data of patient registries. Modern circuit configuration has become less cumbersome, safer, and more efficient.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an adaptation of conventional cardiopulmonary bypass techniques to provide cardiopulmonary support. ECMO provides physiologic cardiopulmonary support to aid reversible aspects of the disease process and to allow recovery. ECMO does not provide treatment of the underlying disease.
