Article Synopsis
  • Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a rare inflammatory condition that affects both eyes after trauma or surgery to one eye, with a higher incidence after penetrating injuries and specific surgical procedures.
  • Symptoms typically appear within a few days to months, with most cases occurring within the first year post-injury, manifesting as blurry vision, pain, and sensitivity to light in the unaffected eye.
  • Diagnosis is made clinically, and treatment usually starts with corticosteroids, with other immunosuppressive drugs considered if steroids are ineffective or cause side effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the safety and feasibility of using perfluorocarbon-perfused vitrectomy (PCPV) in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
  • Results showed no significant harm to endothelial cells or differences in electroretinography after surgery, with a high success rate in grading the procedures (77.8% for PDR and 90% for RRD achieving grade 5/5).
  • PCPV improved visibility during surgery and provided benefits like quicker retinal reattachment and reduced blood in the vitreous cavity, suggesting it may be a better alternative to traditional balanced saline solutions.

Background: Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a common retinal vascular disorder with potentially complications: (1) persistent macular edema and (2) neovascular glaucoma. No safe treatment exists that promotes the return of lost vision. Eyes with CRVO may be predisposed to vitreous degeneration.

Objective: This study focuses on determining the intra- and post-operative complications stemming from technical difficulties, anatomical aspects, intraoperatory management and visual outcome of post-vitrectomized patients that undergo phacoemulsification.

Method: In this prospective, longitudinal, observational and descriptive study phacoemulsification was performed in 25 post-vitrectomized eyes that required cataract surgery. Pre-surgical variables: sex, age, affected eye, visual accuity, underlying vitreoretinal disease, anterior segment morphological findings such as: cataract density and pupil alterations.

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility and advantages of using perfluorocarbon liquid (PCL) perfusion to remove vitreous during suction-cutting vitrectomy in rabbit and pig eyes.

Design: Experimental study.

Methods: Balanced salt solution (BSS) was replaced by PCL perfusion during experimental vitrectomy.

Background And Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a new method of delivering diode laser (810 nm) spots through an indirect ophthalmoscope in conjunction with intravenous indocyanine green to treat choroidal neovascularizations (CNVs) larger than 5,400 microm.

Patients And Methods: A prospective, non-comparative, interventional case series study was conducted with 8 patients with CNV secondary to age-related macular degeneration. Laser pulses were applied to the CNV within 5 minutes of an intravenous injection of 25 mg of indocyanine green.
