The present article objective is to determine the net mass balance of the glacier Znosko for periods 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. It is situated on King George Island which belongs to the groups Shetland of the South, Antarctic Peninsula region. For this objective, during February 2018 a net of 19 stakes (which were controlled once during February 2019 and 2020) were installed on the glacier ablation zone, drilling in the accumulation zone and about flights using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to control the glacier zone and geomorphological changes.

The present work describes a laboratory-on-a-drone (Lab-on-a-Drone) developed to perform detection of contaminants in environmental water samples. Toward this goal, the system was mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) (drone) and remotely controlled Wi-Fi to acquire a water sample, perform the electrochemical detection step, and then send the voltammetry data to a smartphone. This Lab-on-a-Drone system was also able to recharge its battery using a solar cell, greatly increasing the autonomy of the system, even in the absence of a power line.

The present study reports, for the first time, the development and application of a highly efficient method based on digital imaging analysis for the simultaneous determination of Cu and furfural in cachaça samples using a two-phase system and chemometrics tools. Furfural reacts with aniline in an acidic medium to form a Schiff base, which exhibits a pink color. On the other hand, Cu reacts with cuprizone in a basic medium to form a blue complex.

In this work, a simple, low-cost and easy-to-handle analytical procedure based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) is proposed to check commercially available formulated microbicides that are used to mitigate the transmission of viruses, such as SARS-COV-2, or bacterial diseases. For this purpose, CQDs were synthesized pyrolysis using citric acid and ethylenediamine as precursors to produce an intense fluorescence that is used to measure the concentration of hypochlorite, an important biocidal agent present in sanitizing mats, by quenching mechanisms. The characterization of the CQDs was performed using IR spectrophotometry, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurements.

The method was based on the complexation reaction of Cu with the thiocarbazone, and the colored product was analyzed using a smartphone application. In this work we propose for the first time, a paper-based test strip to analyse Cu content in sugar cane spirits, which, due to its simplicity, high portability and fast analytical response (3 min), can be easily applied to in situ analyses by producers. The test strip was developed aiming: i) identify qualitatively the Cu content in sugar cane spirits, and, ii) determine quantitatively the Cu content using a digital image method employing a smartphone. The paper-based test strip was functionalized with cuprizone and optimized through a Box-Behnken, an experimental design for obtaining the best reaction conditions.

We describe a green new method for the synthesis of water-soluble photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) that were functionalized with methimazole (MTZ) and applied to determine Hg based on the fluorescence extinction. Starch obtained from rice was used as a natural source for the production of CDs by hydrothermal treatment. Also, it was proposed a factorial design to optimize the parameters for CD synthesis and the results showed that the luminescence intensity is a function of temperature and not of the heating time in the hydrothermal process.

After reviewing the systematics and distribution of the living and fossil small West Indian taxa of Tytonidae (Tyto), we reached the following conclusions: (1) Strix tuidara J. E. Gray, 1827, type locality of Brazil, is the earliest available and correct name to be used in a binomen for New World mainland barn owls; (2) the North American mainland subspecies Tyto tuidara pratincola (Bonaparte, 1838), new combination, is resident in the Bahamas ("Tyto perlatus lucayanus" Riley, 1913, is a synonym), where it probably did not colonize until after the European introduction of Rattus Fischer, in Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) where it became established in the 20th century, and subsequently in Puerto Rico; (3) Tyto furcata (Temminck, 1827) of Cuba, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands is a different species restricted to its insular distribution, with "T.
