Hydrogen, crucial for the green energy transition, poses a challenge due to its tendency to degrade surrounding wall materials. To harness hydrogen's potential, it is essential to identify the parameter(s) of materials that modulates hydrogen-material interaction. In a recent publication, we have shown that the reduction (denitridation) of transition metal (TM) nitrides in hydrogen radicals (H*) stops when their work function drops below a threshold limit.

Climate extremes such as droughts are expected to increase in frequency and intensity with global change. Therefore, it is important to map and predict ecosystem responses to such extreme events to maintain ecosystem functions and services. Alongside abiotic factors, biotic factors such as the proportion of needle and broadleaf trees were found to affect forest drought responses, corroborating results from biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) experiments.

Herein hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (hPEI) cryogels are reported for the selective and reversible adsorption of elemental chlorine. The cryogels are prepared in an aqueous solution by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde at subzero temperatures. The final macroporous composites bearing ammonium chloride groups are obtained after freeze-drying.

Background And Purpose: In the Netherlands, the 2022 Quality Standard 'Youth in transition from paediatric to adult care' underscores the importance of structured transitional care for young adults with chronic health conditions. Despite this emphasis, detailed knowledge about transition programs and their successful elements remains sparse. This study aims to bridge this gap by exploring nurse-led transition clinics that had successfully implemented core interventions such as a transition coordinator, warm handover, and individual transition plans.

Article Synopsis
  • - The stable reduction theorem states that for a family of curves of a specific genus over a punctured curve, you can uniquely complete them by adding stable curves at the punctures, potentially after changing the base.
  • - The authors present a new version of this theorem for curves over a particular field, focusing on using Kähler-Einstein metrics.
  • - These Kähler-Einstein metrics help in determining the stable curves that appear at the punctures in the limit.

Article Synopsis
  • The study emphasizes the need for advanced coatings to protect materials from reactive hydrogen environments as hydrogen becomes increasingly important for sustainability.
  • It identifies the work function as a critical factor influencing how transition metal nitrides respond to hydrogen radicals, particularly their reducibility at high temperatures.
  • The research suggests that when the work function of a transition metal nitride drops below a certain threshold, the reduction process halts due to hydrogen preferentially binding to metal atoms, thus offering new insights into material stability in hydrogen applications.

Hydrogen is a crucial element in the green energy transition. However, its tendency to react with and diffuse into surrounding materials poses a significant challenge. Therefore, developing coatings to protect system components in hydrogen environments (molecular, radicals (H*), and plasma) is essential.

Study Background: The experience of discrimination through stereotyping, profiling, and bias-informed care not only leads to poor access to healthcare services, but low retention rates of Indigenous health professionals (IHP). As health systems transformation evolves, a significant gap remains in supporting IHP to safely address racism, to be supported culturally to bring their authentic selves and voices to work, and to attend to one's own intellectual, physical, relational, cultural and spiritual wellness within a westernized model of care.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the experiences of IHP working in mainstream healthcare in order to understand how their work environment impacts the delivery of cultural safe practices.

A one pot room temperature synthesis of thionyl tetrafluoride (SOF) from elemental fluorine (F) and thionyl fluoride (SOF) is reported. The selective decagram scale process (100 mmol) allows a quantitative preparation of SOF with high purity. The solid-state structure has also been elucidated and compared with the reported gas phase one.

Article Synopsis
  • Pathogens like oomycetes cause significant yield loss in viticulture, leading to the need for extensive pesticide use; breeders are developing resistant grape varieties using wild germplasm.
  • Researchers created a genetic map from 244 F individuals by crossing a susceptible cultivar 'Tigvoasa' with a resistant breeding line, analyzing 627 molecular markers to find resistance traits.
  • The study identified a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) on linkage Group 9 that is strongly associated with downy mildew resistance and may differ from previously known resistant loci, indicating a novel genetic variant.

Compounds containing Mn-O bonds are of utmost importance in biological systems and catalytic processes. Nevertheless, mononuclear manganese complexes containing all O-donor ligands are still rare. Taking advantage of the low tendency of the pentafluoroorthotellurate ligand (teflate, OTeF) to bridge metal centers, we have synthesized two homoleptic manganese complexes with monomeric structures and an all O-donor coordination sphere.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare frequency-place mismatch in adult cochlear implant (CI) recipients using different types of electrode arrays (lateral wall and perimodiolar/mid scala) and assess their impact on speech recognition and quality of life after 3 months.
  • Researchers examined 126 adult participants, measuring angular insertion depth and semitone mismatch via CT scans and evaluating speech recognition using standard tests.
  • Findings showed that lateral wall arrays had deeper insertion and less semitone mismatch, but no significant relationship was found between mismatch and early speech perception; however, greater mismatch negatively affected quality of life for those with perimodiolar arrays.

Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) are reported as protective coatings in reactive hydrogen environments. Although the permeation of H through TMN coatings is well reported, their reducibility in H* environments is less investigated. In this work, we categorize the interaction of H* with ambient exposed TiN, ZrN, HfN, VN, NbN, and TaN thin films at 700 °C into three classes.

Major trauma systems have evolved in many European countries and have resulted in improved care in terms of mortality and morbidity. Many of the systems have similar history, with reports of either poor services, or a single disaster, driving change of policy and set up. We report on 4 European systems, looking at the background, set up and some of the results.

The pentafluoroorthotellurate group (teflate, OTeF) is considered as a bulky analogue of fluoride, yet its coordination behavior in transition metal complexes is not fully understood. By reaction of [CoCl] and neat ClOTeF, we synthesized the first cobalt teflate complex, [Co(OTeF)], which exhibits moisture-resistant Co-OTeF bonds. Through a combined experimental and theoretical (DFT and NEVPT2) study, the properties and electronic structure of this species have been investigated.

The COVID-19 pandemic created the need to use digital health resources (DR), as they sometimes were the only option to receive healthcare or social interaction. The aim of this research is to provide insight into the experiences during the lockdown of older people using DR for health in general and the points of improvement they see. A qualitative study was carried out using semi-structured interviews with older persons by telephone.

Fibrocartilaginous embolism is a rarely reported cause of spinal cord infarction. Seemingly innocuous activities may be associated with nucleus pulposus material embolising to the spinal cord vasculature. We describe a 36-year-old woman presenting with bilateral arm paraesthesia and chest pain that evolved into an acute cord syndrome.
