Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 through reported positive RT-PCR tests is biased due to non-random testing. Prevalence estimation in population-based samples corrects for this bias. Within this context, the pooled testing design offers many advantages, but several challenges remain with regards to the analysis of such data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of reducing genomic sequencing on SARS-CoV-2 surveillance outcomes in Switzerland, analyzing over 143,000 sequences.
  • Results show that while some key outcomes like variant detection and cluster analysis could still be achieved with only 35% of the original sequencing effort, this reduction varies significantly by viral lineage.
  • The research highlights the need for genomic surveillance programs to balance cost and public health benefits, emphasizing that reduced sequencing may compromise accuracy in tracking emerging variants of concern.

Objective: While premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) as defined in DSM has become an established diagnosis, and a formal indication for drug treatment, the relative impact of the disparate symptoms named in the criteria, and to what extent they indeed constitute parts of one syndrome, remains insufficiently clarified. We have therefore explored the frequency, impact, and inter-relationship of different PMDD symptoms.

Method: Using a web survey, 10,457 Swedish women of fertile age were asked to retrospectively assess if they experience reduced functioning due to symptoms clearly associated with the premenstrual phase.

With every surgical procedure there is a risk of postoperative infection (surgical site infection = SSI). This risk of infection can be influenced by various factors, including perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis. In terms of antibiotic stewardship, antibiotics should only be used if there is a proven benefit for the patient.

The efficacy of salicylic acid paste (SA) in the treatment of ulcerative bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) was assessed by combining clinical and histopathological analyses with molecular biological techniques. The latter were conducted in a blinded manner to reach maximum objectivity. Prior to treatment, M2-stage BDD lesions (n = 26, diagnosed in 21 dairy cows) exhibited ulceration, with severe perivascular, chronic, lymphoplasmacytic dermatitis and extensive keratinolysis being noted in most cases.

Several strains belonging to the genus Corynebacterium, but not to any described species of the genus were isolated from bovine mastitic milk samples over the past five years in the diagnostic unit of the University of Bern. Six of these strains (18M0132, 17M2518, 18M0913, 19M0083, 20M1046 and 20M1090) that were phenotypically similar were further characterized genotypically. Gram-positive coryneform rods were catalase positive, facultative anaerobe and CAMP-test negative.

Since the spread of classical digital dermatitis (DD) lesions within the cattle population, frequency of infections of interdigital hyperplasia (IH) lesions with DD-associated Treponema spp. (IH+DD) increased. The aim of the present case series is to describe an alternative treatment technique to surgical lesion removal or local treatment of HI+DD lesions with antibiotics.

Laboratory stressors are essential tools to study the human stress response. However, despite considerable progress in the development of stress induction procedures in recent years, the field is still missing standardization and the methods employed frequently require considerable personnel resources. Virtual reality (VR) offers flexible solutions to these problems, but available VR stress-induction tests still contain important sources of variation that challenge data interpretation.

The prevention of bovine respiratory disease is important, as it may lead to impaired welfare, economic losses, and considerable antimicrobial use, which can be associated with antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of respiratory viruses and to identify risk factors for their occurrence. A convenience sample of 764 deep nasopharyngeal swab samples from veal calves was screened by PCR for bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine parainfluenza-3 virus (BPI3V), bovine coronavirus (BCoV), influenza D virus (IDV), and influenza C virus (ICV).

Individuals differ in their physiological responsiveness to stressful challenges, and stress potentiates the development of many diseases. Heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of cardiac vagal break, is emerging as a strong index of physiological stress vulnerability. Thus, it is important to develop tools that identify predictive markers of individual differences in HRV responsiveness without exposing subjects to high stress.

Occasionally black-and-white spotted calves appear in Switzerland, which show a special fur only in the pigmented area. Otherwise these animals are normally developed. The white hairs are normal, but they appear relatively long and smooth, because the pigmented hairs are curly and thus appear shortened.

Objective: Although the assessment of expression of serotonin-related genes in experimental animals has become a common strategy to shed light on variations in brain serotonergic function, it remains largely unknown to what extent the manipulation of serotonin levels causes detectable changes in gene expression. We therefore chose to investigate how sub-acute depletion or elevation of brain serotonin influences the expression of a number of serotonin-related genes in six brain areas.

Methods: Male Wistar rats were administered a serotonin synthesis inhibitor, para-chlorophenylalanine (p-CPA), or a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, paroxetine, for 3 days and then sacrificed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the duration of estrus suppression after a double administration of the anti-GnRH vaccine Improvac® (Zoetis Schweiz GmbH, 2800 Delémont) in cows. Furthermore, it should be investigated, if a third administration could prolong the effect of the cycle suppression. A total of 21 cows (more than four weeks post partum) were vaccinated twice, at least 35 days apart, with 2 ml Improvac® (0.

Emerging evidence suggest that appetite-regulating peptides modulate social behaviors. We here investigate whether the anorexigenic peptide neuromedin U (NMU) modulates sexual behavior in male mice. However, instead of modulating sexual behaviors, NMU administered into the third ventricle increased self-grooming behavior.

Aggressive behaviour is of crucial importance in the defence for limited resources including food and mates and involves central serotonin as well as dopamine signalling. As ghrelin modulates food intake and sexual behaviour we initially investigated the hypothesis that central ghrelin signalling regulates aggressive behaviour in the resident intruder paradigm in male mice. Moreover, interaction between ghrelin signalling and serotonergic, noradrenergic as well as dopaminergic neurotransmission in aggression was investigated.

Background: It is well-established that organizational effects of sex steroids during early development are fundamental for sex-typical displays of, for example, mating and aggressive behaviors in rodents and other species. Male and female brains are known to differ with respect to neuronal morphology in particular regions of the brain, including the number and size of neurons, and the density and length of dendrites in nuclei of hypothalamus and amygdala. The aim of the present study was to use global proteomics to identify proteins differentially expressed in hypothalamus/amygdala during early development (postnatal day 8) of male, female and conditional androgen receptor knockout (AR) male mice, lacking androgen receptors specifically in the brain.
