Recent work demonstrates that epidermal keratinocytes are critical for normal touch sensation. However, it is unknown whether keratinocytes contribute to touch-evoked pain and hypersensitivity after tissue injury. Here, we used a mouse model of paclitaxel treatment to determine the extent to which keratinocyte activity contributes to the severe neuropathic pain that accompanies chemotherapy.

Purpose: To reduce opioid consumption and decrease length of stay (LOS) in bariatric surgical patients by implementing an evidence-based, nonpharmacologic enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) intervention bundle.
Design: Evidence-based practice project.
Methods: We developed and implemented a nonpharmacologic ERAS bundle from existing American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses Standards and bariatric and subspecialty surgical ERAS protocols to standardize the postoperative nursing care of bariatric patients.
Background: Despite advances made in pancreatic cancer treatment, the extent of progress made in pancreatic cancer mortality at the population level remains unclear. Our cross-sectional study sought to measure trends in pancreatic cancer mortality in the United States in the last 2 decades.
Methods: Patients with pancreatic cancer mortality from 1999 to 2020 were analyzed from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER).
Background: The 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines added thyroid lobectomy (TL) as the appropriate treatment for low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). We aimed to investigate the population-level factors that influence the utilization of TL.
Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database was queried for all DTC patients fitting low-risk criteria as defined by the ATA.
Approximately 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and nearly a quarter of chronic pain patients have reported misusing opioid prescriptions. Repeated drug seeking is associated with reactivation of an ensemble of neurons sparsely scattered throughout the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC). Prior research has demonstrated that chronic pain increases intrinsic excitability of dmPFC neurons, which may increase the likelihood of reactivation during drug seeking.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFew studies have examined variability in OR utilization across weekdays. We conducted a retrospective analysis to determine OR utilization differences by day of the week and the source and financial effects of any variability. We extracted 55 months of data from a surgical data repository to calculate OR utilization, late starts, idle times, and delays for each weekday.

Methods: Patients undergoing esophageal resection between 2005 and 2015 were identified in the National Cancer Database. High, medium, and low-volume hospital strata were defined by quartiles.
The incidence of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) is on the rise primarily due to the increasing use of cross-sectional imaging. Most of these incidentally detected lesions are non-functional PNETs with a small proportion of lesions being hormone-secreting, functional neoplasms. With recent advances in surgical approaches and systemic therapies, the management of PNETs have undergone a paradigm shift towards a more individualized approach.

Workflow differences across hospital units can impede communication and relationships among health care professionals. Relational coordination (RC) is a process of communication supported by shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect and is associated with quality of care and better performance outcomes in civilian hospitals.

Challenges to gaining mechanistic insight into pathogenic SCD pain processes include differential gene expression and function of sensory neurons between humans and mice with SCD, and extremely limited availability of neuronal tissues from patients with SCD. Here, we used induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), derived from patients with SCD, differentiated into sensory neurons (SCD iSNs) to begin to overcome these challenges.

While ASCs provide cost-effective and quality healthcare comparable to inpatient hospitals, they often lack robust support services, including lactation support. This article presents key information on breastfeeding benefits, early weaning risks, and strategies for nurses in ASCs to educate and support patients who are breastfeeding.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFew analgesics identified using preclinical models have successfully translated to clinical use. These translational limitations may be due to the unidimensional nature of behavioral response measures used to assess rodent nociception. Advances in high-speed videography for pain behavior allow for objective quantification of nuanced aspects of evoked paw withdrawal responses.

Recent cohort studies find an association between bariatric surgery and reduced longitudinal cancer risk, but with heterogeneous findings.
Observations: This review summarizes how obesity leads to an increased risk of developing cancer and synthesizes current evidence behind the potential for bariatric surgery to reduce longitudinal cancer risk.
Recent work demonstrates that epidermal keratinocytes are critical for normal touch sensation. However, it is unknown if keratinocytes contribute to touch evoked pain and hypersensitivity following tissue injury. Here, we used inhibitory optogenetic and chemogenetic techniques to determine the extent to which keratinocyte activity contributes to the severe neuropathic pain that accompanies chemotherapeutic treatment.

Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy can increase tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) density, which may predict overall survival (OS). We hypothesized that adding programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) blockade to chemoradiotherapy would be well tolerated and increase TILs among patients with localized PDAC.

In military treatment facilities, either perioperative registered nurses or labor and delivery (L&D) nurses provide skilled intraoperative nursing care for cesarean deliveries. However, L&D and perioperative nurses occupy vastly different roles in the continuum of care and may possess widely differing levels of surgical training and experience.

There is increasing recognition that non-technical skills, including communication and relationships, greatly impact interprofessional team performance and health care quality. Team familiarity and size are critical structural components that potentially influence information flow, communication, and efficiency.
