Purpose: To examine the associations and substitutions of dietary sugars [extrinsic (free) or intrinsic (non-free)] as well as dietary starch and fiber intakes for indices of body fat and cardiometabolic health.

Methods: Dietary intake was assessed at multiple times using multi-day 24-hour recalls over 18-months for indices of body fat (body fat %, waist circumference, BMI, and weight change) (n = 1066) and at baseline and 12 months for cardiometabolic outcomes (LDL, HDL, HbA1c) (n = 736). Bayesian modeling was applied to analyze the probabilistic impact of dietary carbohydrate components using credible intervals for association and substitution analyses with repeated measures random effects modeling.

Scaling minerals, such as barite, can cause detrimental consequences for oil/gas pipelines and water systems, but their formation can be inhibited by organic chelators such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Here, we resolve how EDTA affects sorption and desorption of Pb at the barite (001) surface using a combination of X-ray scattering and microscopy measurements. In the presence of EDTA, Pb incorporated in the topmost part of the barite surface and adsorbed as inner-sphere complexes on the surface.

Timely receipt of community-based follow-up after inpatient psychiatric discharge is associated with positive outcomes. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to identify socio-demographic and clinical factors associated with failure to receive community mental health follow-up within 7 days. Osteopontin (OPN) is a multi-functional glycoprotein that coordinates the innate immune response, prevents nanocrystal formation in renal tubule fluid, and is a biomarker for kidney injury. OPN expression is markedly increased in cystic epithelial cells of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) kidneys; however, its role in PKD progression remains unclear. We investigated the in vitro effects of recombinant OPN on the proliferation of tubular epithelial cells from PKD and normal human kidneys and in vivo effects of OPN deletion on kidney cyst formation, fibrosis, and mineral metabolism in pcy/pcy mice, a non-orthologous model of autosomal-dominant PKD.

Using a data set that includes plant-lemur interactions across Madagascar, we studied the current state of knowledge of these interactions and their structure to determine which plant species are most at risk of losing dispersal services due to the loss of lemurs.

Pressure-composition binary phase diagrams were determined for methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, thiophene, benzothiophene, or dibenzothiophene with carbon dioxide at temperatures from 363 to 453 K and pressures from 2 to 20 MPa. Utilizing Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo molecular simulation, phase coexistence compositions were determined, along with the impact of 4% water cosolvent on select results. One-dimensional (1D) olivine iron phosphate (FePO) is widely proposed for electrochemical lithium (Li) extraction from dilute water sources, however, significant variations in Li selectivity were observed for particles with different physical attributes. Serial crystallography requires large numbers of microcrystals and robust strategies to rapidly apply substrates to initiate reactions in time-resolved studies. Here, we report the use of droplet miniaturization for the controlled production of uniform crystals, providing an avenue for controlled substrate addition and synchronous reaction initiation. The approach was evaluated using two enzymatic systems, yielding 3 µm crystals of lysozyme and 2 µm crystals of Pdx1, an Arabidopsis enzyme involved in vitamin B6 biosynthesis.

Housing insecurity is associated with co-occurring depression and pain interfering with daily activities. Network analysis of depressive symptoms along with associated risk or protective exposures may identify potential targets for intervention in patients with co-occurring bodily pain. Engineering the plant immune system offers genetic solutions to mitigate crop diseases caused by diverse agriculturally significant pathogens and pests. Modification of intracellular plant immune receptors of the nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) receptor superfamily for expanded recognition of pathogen virulence proteins (effectors) is a promising approach for engineering disease resistance.
